Are Your 2015 Goals S.M.A.R.T.?

Even since I was laid off from the mortgage industry in 2009, I dabbled in various work-at-home businesses, but recently decided to take the plunge and give it my all. My decision to do this was simple…I wanted the flexibility to work at my own pace on my own terms and hang out with my daughter. Little did I know it was going to be a bit more challenging that I thought.

You see, one of the things I learned quickly was that I had to set goals. Working in corporate America, goals are usually easy to set because, as an employee, your brain is engrained with the mission/goals of the company. For me, as a self-employed solopreneur, setting goals wasn't so easy. So, I decided to enroll in a business bootcamp to help me get my mindset right (that’s another blog post) and help to get me on track for setting goals for myself and my business.

In my opinion, goal setting can be take some time, but if you use the following formula, you will set yourself up for success in 2015. Your goals need to be:

    1. S = Specific- Identifying a specific goal will not only give you a sense of accomplishment, but it will keep you on track. For example, let’s say you want to lose weight, your specific goal would be the # of pounds you’d like to lose.

    2. M = Measurable – Your goal needs to be measurable. Ask yourself, how am I going to measure my weight loss? You need to establish concrete criteria for measuring your progress, maybe, by weighing yourself every week.

    3. A= Attainable – Determine what’s most important. When you do this, you begin to figure out various ways to make it happen. So, for example, you need to work out at the gym, but because you have family obligations in the evening, you may not be able to go in the evenings. You may find that going in the morning or during your lunch break may be a better alternative and you may even find that you need to do a different form of exercise to accomplish your goal.

    4. R = Realistic - This is where people sometime falter when setting goals. The objective here is to determine what is feasible so that you don’t set yourself for failure. If you weigh 150 pounds and your goal is to lose 10 pounds in a month, that’s feasible, but if you weigh 300 pounds, losing 50 pounds in a month may not. Plus losing that amount of weight in that time frame may cause other issues as well.

5. T = Time-Based – Your goal should have a time frame in which you want to accomplish it.

A good example of a S.M.A.R.T. goal is to lose 10 pounds in 30 days by going to the gym 3 times a week for an hour each time, changing your diet to include more healthy foods, cutting out sugar, drinking ½ your weight in water, and getting 7 hours of sleep.

I hope you got value from this post. If you did, please like it, share it, or pin it to help you set S.M.A.R.T goals for 2015!
