Use of Live Chat

The live chat feature is giving me a headache ... as it is just a linear list of questions and answers with the user name for reference it is very difficult to determine what has been responded to and what is waiting for answers.

It would be so much more helpful to everyone if the Chat were presented in a Nested Format so that the responses are attached to the questions similar to other Chat products.

Those trying to help others are wasting time trying to figure out the status of each query.

My suggetions for improvements to make life easier for all members

1. Separate out the Social Chat from Help Chat ... this will allow for a more focussed information stream and be more efficient for those members, willing to donate their time to helping other members.

2. Present all Chats in a nested format so that the repsonse is shown directly under the question so that the posts make sense and have relevance to each other ... currently you must search for both to determine what the response was about.

3. Introduce colour or status codes to indicate which Chat Messages have been responded to, those that are pending and those that are resolved. If someone resolves their own question they should change the status so others don't waste time looking up the answer to something no longer an issue.

Live chat can be a very effective tool ... hopefully an update to the Chat Features is in the works as it desparately needs improvement!

Great idea Allan. I rarely go onto chat but it would be nice if you were able to see the original question. Jim

I agree. I help when I can, but sometimes I never know if it was answered because of, "Hello", "How is everyone" "Hi Bob", etc.

Thanks for your comment, Cathy, a separate "HELP Chat" would make it easier to respond for sure. :)

Good suggestions, yes it would be nice to have these changes. I'm avoiding chat because of the reasons you have mentioned.

I like your suggestions Allan... I think because WA caters for such a diverse community both in age and location, we all get different experiences from live chat. I being in the European timeframe probably find it very different from those in USA where it must get quite crowded at times! But I like the natural flow of conversations, and should a question not get answered, there are other areas to go to ask..

Hi Helen, yes working in the 5-8 hour time difference would make the experience somewhat less busy ... the search bar at the top is amazing, the site content is fully indexed and nearly all of the questions could be resolved by simply using that tool. Need to refer more people to it, I think ...

Hi Allan,

I go to the Help Center and Ask a Question there. That way, your questions and responses are saved. I get help pretty quick this way. I prefer this method over Live Chat.

Yes, that is a good feature ... as you can target your question to the training topics in "Classrooms" ...

There are multiple ways to provide help. Live chat is for those who are going to stay connected for a block of time.

You can look for unanswered questions with the pinned options. Also, those are provided under each training course.

Classrooms are another area that has the nested format so everything has already been put into use here.

Just a matter of people staying around for their questions to be answered.

When people disappear for 10 minutes or longer, I stop responding because I am usually in and out of live chat.

Each member is going to want and behave in different manners so, oftentimes PMs will even be the best option for non-starter members.

Hi Eric .... yes the various sources of help are extensive which makes this platform so beneficial ... the chat however is not as effective as it could be. I understand it was added not too long ago ... hopefully it is due for an upgrade ... it could be a major benefit for members!

Live chat is a very hit or miss experience. Sometimes i find people genuinely looking for help and i help out when i can.
Other times its like a Twitter feed with a bad dose of verbal diarrhea.
Its not my favourite aspect of WA

Hi Dave, Yes, that is true ... a few tweaks would make it much more useful and effective ... I am reluctant to engage sometimes as it is unclear if the question has already been answered or not.
