Looking back -

I was born in a very small gold mining town (now almost a ghost town) in British Columbia, Canada in 1948 ... shortly after the end of World War II.

It was a time for rebuilding and re-establishing the norms ... the economy was struggling to compensate for the loss of war-related jobs and industries.

Women were sent back to the home, as the men who returned from war, took back the role of bread-winner. The women's efforts and contributions to the war effort were largely forgotten!

A look back at some scientific and economic developments / milestones of the past eight decades - makes me realize just how far we have come, just in my lifetime! The changes to technology and society have been huge ... we can only hope the positive changes continue for the betterment of all.

Late 1940s - first jet aircraft, television invented, microwave energy discovered, radar invented, Tupperware created, transistor invented, sound barrier broken for first time

1950s - sputnik launched, hydrogen bomb developed, polypropylene developed, NASA created, transistor developed, first nuclear power plant

1960s - birth control pill introduced, touch tone phones, laser light, 8 track audio tape invented, mouse device for computer input, email technology developed, BASIC computer programming language defined, Civil Rights Act passed, Social reforms, first human on the moon

1970s - integrated circuits, laser technology, space exploration, Space Lab project, moon landings, radiation, black holes, solar energy, oil supply crisis, economic slowdown, inflation rate reached 13% by end of decade

1980s - genetic modification, home computers, Nintendo, Apple, IBM PC, Walkman audio devices, public bulletin boards (prior to internet), modem access to remote computers, Windows 1, Compact Disc, hppt defined leading to the Internet

1990s - decade for digital technology - personal computers, cellular phones, World Wide Web (WWW), Y2K pandemonium, digital camera, CD-ROM storage, DVD format, MP3 players, email such as HotMail and AOL

2000s - decade of globalization - Internet becomes ubiquitous, SARS outbreak, Swine Flu, Free Trade agreements, Interest Rate crisis, Dot Com bubble burst, Sub-prime mortgage crisis, energy (oil) crisis, genome, genetic engineering, mars rover, exoplanets, deep space exploration, physics, global warming concerns

2010s - Global financial crisis, internet of things, cloud computing, high speed wireless communications, social media, global warming crisis, cyber security, Ebola outbreak, quantum mechanics, genome editing, nano satellites, reusable launch vehicles, government control of internet, smartphones, tablet computers, mobile apps, cryptocurrency, 3D printing, virtual reality, electric vehicles, self driving automobiles

There were, of course, countless other developments and changes from a political, social and environmental perspective.

Looking Forward -

What does the 2020s decade look like?

What amazing changes are you going to make to ensure it is the most productive and beneficial decade of your life?

2020s - to be determined, but likely will include space tourism, autonomous vehicles, ultra-high speed communications, molecular engineering, quantum mechanics, solar exploration, universe exploration, environmental issues and many, many more

Thank you Allan - The only thing that does not change is the fact that everything changes.

Where would we be without change? LOL
Best wishes, James

You're right... change is good... we hope!

Allan, thanks so much for the brief history about the decades of our life. its amazing to think where we have come. Just the fact that I can read a post that you wrote in B.C. a few seconds after you wrote and then instantly send a respond is amazing. I am always excited about the new year not to mention the new decade. Thanks for this post. Happy New Year.

The world is your congregation and the Internet your pulpit!
The sharing of information and ideas has never been easier nor so broad based.
I too, am amazed each time I watch an event unfolding in real time ... recently I watched the underwater exploration of a Pacific Ocean ridge, two kilometers deep, in real time ... the launch of new satellite as it happened, a hockey game in the Ukraine as it is played .. etc.
We take these as normal ... but truly they are not what any other generation has ever experienced!
A positive look at our achievements always helps to offset the negative news and world issues still not addressed!
Much more to do ...
Allan

Thanks for a great response. I am going to save this one.
