Have any of you encountered the following errors?

Error: Missing required field "updated".
Error: Missing required hCard "author"

It is showing up as an erro

Well I pass for authorship. It's just down below in rich snippets where it shows those errors.

In webmaster tools, it's in the left sidebar > Search Appearances > Structured Data

I think I have some good news for you. I just checked those stats on my site and it showed 99 errors but my site acts like a perfectly healthy site. I don't think you have anything to worry about:)

Really? So you have the same thing? It can't be good to have errors of any sort, can it?

I have other crawl errors within my site map and Google even states that you should probably expect to see some and they don't hurt your site's performance.
I don't fully understand it myself, but I get traffic and clicks on affiliate links everyday, so I'm not too concerned about it :)

Ok, thanks Steve! I will try to ignore it. :) Thanks for the help! Sorry to take up a lot of your day!

No problema! :)

Can you tell me how you found that page in your Webmaster tools. I can't seem to find it in mine.

OK, I just did a Google search for your website url and your name is associated with the search result, so I'm assuming authorship is working.

Have your ulr's been indexed within your sitemap?

I've had 141 web pages submitted with my site map. And 43 pages indexed. Does that make sense?

Hmm.... New pages can take time to be indexed if you don't tell Google to crawl them manually. But that is a lot of pages missing from the index.

I haven't seen it. Will be watching to see what answers you get. Hmmm Thanks for throwing it out there!

Just wondering your opinions on this...

I have a weekly post on my website that I do called Literary Quote of the Week. I have the quote, and include a short biog

To avoid the problem altogether, make a screenshot of the information and add it to your page. Fill the alt tag for the png with your keyword for the page.

Google bots cannot "read" photos and therefore will not punish you in any way for the quotes and the content.

That seems a little sneaky to me... I think I'll just work on adding my own content to those pages. Thanks for the idea though... I never thought of that.

I don't think it is sneaky, it was the way I was trained to deal with robots that do not have brains to be able to sort things out. A way of making it easier on myself and the bots.
I do not demand that you agree with me, by any means.

Hope all goes extra great for ya!

Wow, this is ironic. I just finished a post for small biz trends that was all about nofollow. So, maybe I can help.

First let me ask you a couple questions...

What are you using the "nofollow" for?

I can see why you might be using noindex but nofollow is for links. So, if you're linking to the original source of the content and using nofollow, you might actually be doing more harm than good. In this case I'd recommend noindex, follow.

Are you adding any content to the bio and quotes at all?

Google knows lots of people copy quotes and things like that. But if you're doing just that and not adding anything, Google sees it as, you're not adding value for the reader.

If you are adding content to it, then you're fine. It needs to be more than just a few words though.

Having duplicate content is definitely worse than noindex, nofollow. But you might not need to worry about any of this. Let's see what your answers are and we can go from there.

Well, honestly I would be using NOFOLLOW because I remember Kyle telling us to check all 4 of those robot meta boxes in All in one SEO when we set up the Privacy Policy.
- NOINDEX
- NOFOLLOW
- NOODP
- NOYDIR
That's my only reason. I really don't understand these completely. For these posts, I am not linking to the original source, therefore I have no links on these pages.

Up until this point I have been adding none of my own content to these pages. It's just the straight up quote and bio.

Looking at what you've said though, I can definitely add a paragraph or two to each of these pages to add value. (My thoughts on the quote or the author.) This could be a solution to my question, and I would avoid having duplicate content then.

Would a few paragraphs be enough here?

Thank you so much for your quick response!

That's a great question, and one that Matt Cutts (Google) doesn't seem to want to answer. I think it boils down to just adding enough value for your readers. You know them better than anyone but as long as they are enjoying the page (commenting, sharing, etc..) you can get away with a lot.

I guess I kinda skipped over your question though, didn't I?

"Does Google penalize you for having multiple posts marked meta NOINDEX and NOFOLLOW?"

You can 'Noindex' anything you want. And until you feel okay with the content you're adding, it's probably best to do so. But I wouldn't use nofollow on all those pages. You could miss out on a lot of good internal "link juice" if you do.

If you need more help let me know. You might also consider visiting https://support.google.com and reading up on what they say.

Hope that helps

Thanks so much!

If you were to go back and re-watch that part, it would say check those for the "privacy page" only. Nobody needs the privacy page indexed and a lot of them are the same content. It's only for the privacy page. All other content posted needs to be followed to get indexed.

Also, the site map and connecting all of it together.

Here is a great video that I have watched at least a dozen times to help you get it all connected.

Keyword, Niche and Market Research

I have a question about this...

When we search for keywords while doing research, it gives us the results for competition, traffic, etc. for the keyword in "quotes," which

I just wrote a blog that explains this process. You can read it here if you like: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/steveo5770/blog/understanding-competition-analysis-for-beginners

Thank you for the link Steve! Very helpful. Great job on getting ranked on page 1 by the way!

So searching WITH quotes is showing me my direct competition pages. Searching WITHOUT is showing me pages that include my keywords in any order. I get that now...

Your keyword showed 34 competing pages with quotes and millions of pages when no using quotes.

How did your keyword/page get ranked on page 1 of google then, with ALL of those other pages also using the same words in different order?

When a page is deemed popular by Google, they tend to show that page for more and more search variations.
My most popular page is on page 1 for 35 variations of my keyword!
Just trust what the keyword tool is telling you. Understand how to optimize your pages/posts for those keyword phrases, and Google WILL reward your efforts:)

Ahhhhh... I see now. :)

So great content, with many variations of your keyword in that relevant content is pushing your site forward in those rankings even when quotes aren't used in the search! It all comes back to content huh?!

I tend to use 2 or 3 different keywords in a post. In the title and first paragraph mostly. But if I expand this and also include these keywords throughout my revenant content... I have a better chance of getting ranked higher in Google. I know Kyle taught us this (it sounds way familiar now), but somehow I was only concentrating on the title and first paragraph! I think I have a few updates to make!

I am not counting a top page ranking in Google until it's legitimately there in a search with NO quotes!

This is all finally coming together for me!

Thanks so much, you are the best!

I only focus on 1 keyword phrase per post. When you write 800+ word articles, you tend to "naturally" rank for more long tail keyword phrases:)

Great Post Steve. Great explanation.

Hi Alissa,
I do believe that keywords are just that, one or two words. My website is geared to plus sized women and the keywords I found when searching were plus size, big women, plus size fashion etc. For instance if I put into Google search plus size women I get lots of sites for plus sized women. I am not sure if this answers your question completely, but hope it helps some -Anne

I never use them and as far as I know no one else does...
