Secrets That Successful People Aren't Telling You

Last Update: September 20, 2016

Part 1

Before stumbling upon Wealthy Affiliate I lost quite a bit of money to scams. This isn't news for those who know my story.

I hated my job and was desperate to find another way of making money. So naturally I was very excited when I started searching the web and came across amazing promises:
"Make $1,395 by tomorrow with our system!", "Earn $10,000 per week with just 3 clicks"... you know how those scams go.

After spending a lot of money on these I came across WA. This is when WA did not have a free starter membership so I had to pay to gain access. I promised myself this was the LAST thing I would try.

Wealthy Affiliate got me intrigued because of their "clever" marketing. They didn't show me images of Lambos and big houses. They didn't promise me millions. They didn't promise success overnight. After all it wasn't "clever marketing", it was simple honesty.

... within 1 week or so I had made my very first commission online! It was $33 and I was hooked! I kept on working, making more websites, putting out more content (even though I really sucked at writing). Some websites failed miserably, some brought in money. The point is - I realized making money online is possible.

Part 2

While spending a lot of time online I kept stumbling upon all these gurus. People who didn't promise easy money but they promised to reveal their secrets on how they made 6 or even 7 figures a year online.

I was fascinated by these folks however I wasn't willing to shell out $2,000-$5,000 on their training. Given my history with scams I was still very skeptical.

However, a few "online friends" did purchase those courses and shared them with me. The content was rather good. Not $2,000+ kind of good but very decent. There was one issue though, nothing "incredible" was ever revealed.

Eventually I even met some of these successful online millionaires and I had no doubt about their income claims. Yet, I still felt like they knew something I didn't. I spent years trying to figure out that secret ingredient to their success and I finally got it.

Part 3

As cliché as it might sound, there was no secret. They never shared anything groundbreaking because there was nothing to share. The secret to their success was hard work, dedication and years of time.

I know you might be shaking your head right now in disbelief, thinking "Whatever Alex, they are so successful because they know something we don't". Let me assure you, they don't. There is a common trait though: all those successful ones work really really hard. Do you think they put in 2 hours a day into their business? 4 hours a day? Try again.

Most of them put in 8-12 hours per day 7 days a week. This is how you succeed. Do you need to invest just as much time to make a living? Nope. But if you want to make 100,000$ a year or a million or more, 10 hours a week wouldn't cut it.

Let's do some math

It took you 10-11 years of your life to finish school (I'm talking about elementary+high school). On average you spent 30 hours per week at school and another 10 hours a week doing home work for a total of 40 hours per week.

Imagine you only spent 10 hours a week... it would take you 40+ years to finish school instead of 10. You'd still get your high school diploma but it would take you 40 years.

The same goes for business. If you put in 10 hours a week you would eventually make some income and even a living, however it would take you 4+ times longer than those who put in a lot more time.

Spending time on Facebook is great. Watching hours of video on Youtube is great. Binge-watching 2 seasons of Game of Thrones in a weekend is awesome but it doesn't get you closer to your goals. You waste 10-20-40 hours a week on these activities instead of investing them into your business. If that's your preference than fine. My point is, I am sure that 90% of WA members have a lot more spare time than they think however we all need to manage it properly because there are only 24 hours in a day.

As I mentioned at the beginning of the post I made my very first commission online within a week or so. I started from ZERO. I didn't know how to set up a website, I didn't know how to write content (English being my 4th language didn't help either). I was a complete beginner yet I managed to make money after a week.

You want to know my secret? I spent over 100 hours in front of the computer in that first week. This was certainly overkill and I wouldn't recommend that to you. However, I am not smarter than you, I am not better than you, I am not special in any way. All I did was put in a lot of time and a lot of efforts into it and I saw the results. As simple as that.

You wanted a formula to success? You got it! Now go get some work done.

Success to all of you beautiful people of WA.

Alex

This very good and I am trying to put as much time into this as I can. I can't afford to quit my full job until I start making money however. I have 5 kids. I would love to be able to quit my job and do this instead I am just not there yet

Thank god I found your blog! I've only been in it for 3 days now with about 10 hours of work done and I'm starting to not believe in myself. But you have made it clearer that this again isn't something that happens overnight. I hope to one day get my first sale and continue to snow ball further from there and add my own story of trials and tribulations.

Thanks Alex

I love this post. Building an online business is no different than building a regular business. It's work, just doing the work gets you there. But I would have to say, like you, WA was a breath of fresh air because it wasn't revolutionary, but it's just damn right helpful. best of luck.

Since coming online as a zero newcomer know nothing no idea at all totally out of sort and range from what I've been doing for the past 13 years working before until today, still with little knowledge and much more to learn and it will never finish learning for me.

I am on Alex side on this "secret" as what he told hear is actually the big truthful reality check moment. Maybe our way of working and approach things differently but I saw the common stuff here.

I did my own analyse and some "manual lie detection test" according to my way and method, the truth is painstakingly real. As I am a hard worker myself, I did find out all the "gurus" like Alex mentioned above keep on sticking a malicious knife to me on trying their hardest to make the sales themselves instead of the so-called "secret" and honest guide.

Well, I took my "fishing rod" put few dollars on the table to "help" them make a living they craved for out of me. Of yes, their true colour came out and most importantly those "gurus" even more spending time online worse than me!

At least, the way of my long time working method is always the first year or require at least second year of bloody learning etc. but after that my own approved hard working and "torrid time", the later years just being the smart working approach. Just sometimes need to word hard when required.

Alex just "revealed" the real "great secret".

Thanks for your "time of truth" here.

Wow! I found someone that just went through trials and errors that we are reluctantly throwing our dollars through the bin! I experienced those "genius" scams too.

As I am reaching for the period of applying and try to execute another-another working plan through my very own "guidebook" to do things a step at once according to my forecasted short and long terms aims, Alex my friend from Canada just received my pray for his continued success just now as a way thanking him for this helpful blog!

Thanks!

Excellent post, Alex. There is a no substitute for hard work and those that succeed put in many long hours. I've set a goal for myself to do this full time within the next year and leave my current job. I know with hard work I can make it happen!

Found myself looking back at your posts Alex and you are spot on. The magic formula is really and always will be pure hard work. Things have changed with technology today, I believe its become a new form of hard work. It's all about incorporating the dedicated amount of time to nurture and build one's self knowledge and then applying it. Thanks for your advice and positive posts. Cheers!!! All the best.

Thanks for sharing that Alex. You stated the truth exactly how it should be told. If you are not seeing the success you want, than you need to revaluate things and see just how hard you're working at your business.

I know why I'm not reaching the goals I've set out for myself. The answer is me because I let myself get distracted when I get home from a busy day at my traditional day job. If I don't work consistently, I'm not going to see the results I want. Hard work and determination and stepping outside of your comfort zone is what it will take.

I haven't reached many of my goals for the same reason - distractions :( I am working on it though :D

Alex,

This is one of the most inspirational post I've read in a while. I am amazed by your determination.

Even though I've discovered the power of hard work the way you put it was thought provoking.

"As cliché as it might sound, there was no secret."

Very well said.

Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

Totally agree with what you have to say. Hard work is what it comes down to. There is no success without work. All we need to know is that the work that we put it in right now, will pay off in the end. And it will not only pay off once, it will pay off a 100 times more, where you will never need to redo the same work twice.

They all say that you will have 'flexible hours' to work your own online business. But that still means 'hours' it still means putting in the time and effort.

What I appreciate about Wealthy Affiliate is that Kyle and Carson do NOT flaunt what car they drive nor what house they live in. I appreciate that they keep their personal and family lives private. And that we can do the same. We don't need to show off. We are here to provide service and value to others. There will be those who are willing to pay and appreciate the value of our products and service as it benefits them.
Reply
In a number of reviews I've done on particular digital products, in the sales videos they all hold this one thing in common - as you've pointed out above, flaunting their wealth, mansions (they don't tell you in some cases, these are rented for the video production,) and that they leave the impression that their wealth came directly from the USE of the digital product in consideration. They don't tell you that the source of their wealth came from the sale of this and many other products rather from their use.

They will tell you that you are specially hand-picked to join their tiny insider group of a dozen or so who are given the privilege to use the product (at $47,) yet they don't tell you about the army of key affiliates and JV associates they have, which number in the thousands, and have contests wherein the highest-performing of these receive generous money gifts and trips to Las Vegas - for those with massive email lists that recruit those half-a-dozen lucky individuals to the inner circle!

Like you've pointed out above, they don't tell you the work that REALLY goes into producing such numbers as the claim you will make tomorrow or next week, or next month!

It is indeed legal crime that is going on all over the Internet at unprecedented levels today!

Thanks for the outstanding blog!

Wow Alex!! That's just awesome. Thanks for putting it straight and telling it how it is and your story. You are so right. ..so right! Need to dedicate more time to the "business". To treat it as a business or a job. It's the only way itllw succeed. So right.

Thank you so much!

This was great motivation, thank you. I have hit my week mark recently and so that is exciting that in this amount of time, you had success!
Just out of curiosity, was the first commission that you made in the very first website that you started within WA? Or were you spending around 100 hours working on multiple websites?

Thanks Alex ... for telling it like it is.

I'm getting ready to move on to Bootcamp training. My first niche site is not where I want it to be, but I'm hoping Kyle's training and WA Affiliate site development will trigger some new ideas that can be applied on my niche site.

Hi Dennis,

I can assure you that working through the Affiliate Bootcamp will give you new ideas.

The Starter Course is great and everybody should go through it at first. Then, take it up a notch with the bootcamp. While it's basically the same course, it does seem to go a bit deeper into details. It fills the gaps and answers the questions the Starter Course leaves behind.

Just my 2 cents based on my experience with both courses. :)

Let me know if I can help you with anything.

Hi Nicole ... in my book your inputs are worth so much more than 2 cents. Hope every thing is going well for you.

So when are you going to start farming pistachio nuts?
Reply
NicoleJBN Premium
Hmm...maybe I should bump it up to 5 cents then ;)

It was pecan nuts and if things keep going as they go now, we'll be official pecan nuts harvesters next year.

Hope you're doing great, too!

Thanks for sharing Alex! Very true, hard work is the secret to success at anything we're attempting to do no matter what it is.

Hard work and focusing on the tasks that matter to accomplish something will definitely achieve results...the more of this we do, the more we'll get back.

Best wishes :) ~Sherry

I've not commented to you before but this post hit the nail on the head. Well written indeed. It is what you put into it, or how does the saying go...you reap what you sow?
When I started with WA in April of 2015, I read somewhere that said "...if after 3 years you're not a success,...it's a hobby." I'm trying to follow that philosophy.
Best wishes,
Karen

Hey Karen,
I guess the 3 year thing could be true in most cases. I hope if someone does something for 3 years without any progress they'll start figuring out what they're doing wrong ;)

Buddy, you just wrote on of the most sagest posts in a long time. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Hard work and time spent doing the hard work is the secret to any business success. Sprinkle that with a pinch of patience and we have started down the path to tasting success.

Good reminder Alex...I don't mind the slow and steady approach...I am finishing my Master's Degree after 10 years as I had to take 1 course at a time when I could afford them and still have a regular job.

I started out putting all my free time into WA and my website. Now I have to let it fall back a bit as I am taking another course and still have a full-time job. I am in this for the long-haul though so I am not going to stress about it!

The key is that people who think they can make a full-time income at this in the first year need to know they must make it a full-time job...not just a few hours here and there. So thanks for pointing that out!

Thanks Alex. Wish I would have had this information many years ago prior to me spending lots of money. hahahahaa. We live and we learn and we pick up bits of information along the way and then finally one day it all clicks together.

Yes, hard work is the key. Many people are lazy and want the results without putting in the work. I can say that I was semi in the same boat but most of all the lesson that I learned is that you can not remain the current you to achieve what the new you will receive. You have to adjust and purge old habits in order to be see a change and a movement in your life.

Thanks again for this post.

Cheers to our success,

Yes, that's so right Alex! Most people are just focussing on the successful position someone has, and refuse to look what the person had to do to get there.

How long would it take you to become no #1 on the hitlist, when you pick up a guitar today for the first time?

Love it, You just answered the question, I get this question asked a lot of times, and there is no secret.
I put about 50 hrs a week in websites, and 50 hrs a week or more in my auto business.
and yes they are both very successful.
Thanks, my friend.
You just made my day.
