Here's Why You Aren't Making Sales

“I am ranking well. People are coming to my sites but no one is buying anything through my links, why is that?”

This question comes up pretty often on many Internet marketing websites, including WA. Unfortunately have a website and even traffic might not be enough to make you rich.

There are two main reasons why this happens:

1.Your visitors aren't targeted properly.

You can make a site in the “weight loss” industry and you show off all these amazing diet plans, proven to work, recommended by 27 doctors, easy to follow... but your visitors might be looking for exercise plans and not diets. These folks will come to your site, even click your link that says “Learn How to Lose 344 pounds in 3 hours” but they wouldn't buy anything, they don't want a diet.

This is simply wrong targeting. How do you fix it? Look for people who want to find the right diet; those are the customers you want to target. It is very important to understand WHO your perfect client is. A 15 year old girl might also want to lose weight but she simply doesn't have a credit card and can't buy your e-book, it's as simple as that.

Target the people who have money and are willing to spend it.

2.The Right Product

This is something I learned early on in my Internet Marketing career – People Don’t Want Prevention, They Want an Instant Solution. If your niche is “How to cure anxiety” you can’t sell a product teaching people “How to prevent anxiety”. This is just the way we are programmed; we want to get rid of a problem as soon as possible but we never think of preventing the problem in the first place.

Make sure your product SOLVES and issue and CURES, prevention doesn’t sell.

Recently I did a tutorial on WA about How to Make Your Own Images. However, right before making the tutorial I made a blog post asking people if they wanted such tutorial:

... over 50 people replied to this post within 12 hours and when I read their comments I knew there was a big enough demand for it.

I made it clear that the tutorial will be on "How to MAKE your own images" - not where to find free images, where to buy images, etc. I made it clear that I will teach how to MAKE photos and people seemed to want a tutorial like that.

When tutorial went live it also got lots of great comments and I knew people got what they wanted.

ASK the buyers WHAT they want then give it to them!

Alex

Funny coincidence reading this - I was just thinking about my own niche - just about earning an income online. Trying to work out my target audience for social network sites is giving me a headache - in my head my target is parents who want/need to be making an income at home to stay with the kids but in reality - look at all of us in this community.. the spectrum is so wide I don't really know how to break it down. Although I love the niche because it's my passion I'm considering changing it to something with a more tangible target audience.

Well, if you look at all of us we are the audience for the "Make Money Online" INDUSTRY. However, many of us found WA while looking for a niche and not an industry. Some were searching how to make a free website, some were searching how to earn an extra few dollars from home during weekends, some were looking for jobs for stay-at home moms - these are niches.

:)

So very true, and people really can increase their sales by following your advice. It's critical to know your website visitors and what they're looking for. I've had a Disney Cruise Line website for 15 years, and it was just a hobby in its early years. I didn't try to monetize it because I just enjoyed providing visitors with information about the ships, activities, menus, etc. (I've taken 87 Disney cruises so I know a lot about DCL). Then a travel agency approached me and pointed out that my audience was perfect for TA services because they're people researching a cruise. I hooked up with them as an agent, and sure enough, it turned into a viable business almost immediately, and I'm still doing it to this day.

Wow that.s a great story and a perfect example that providing valuable and helpful information is what keeps the visitors coming back for more, the PROFIT is a cool add-on :)

By the way, how in the world did you manage to take 87 cruises? :o

Nice post Alex

Thank You, Damien!

Hi Alex - well thought out - ask if people want something - gauge their responses, and give them what they want. You can't lose with that strategy.

I was one of the people who grasped what you were asking, and when you created it, I read it and bookmarked it straight away. If you were selling it, next time I need to create (not find) an image, I'd know where to look (and buy).

Simple, but brilliant!

All the best, Mark

Thanks, Mark! As many successful Gurus teach: "Give away your best content completely FREE. People will buy what you offer afterwards" :)

There is another point here: Build a List. Because it's so easy to ask your list what they want and what they struggle with.

I like very much to read your blogs... so far, they have all been very good... thanks for sharing your thoughts and knowledge that I know will help many!

Good post. Thanks

Thank you for sharing, good reminders of our who our target market is and what they want.

Thanks for reading :)

You nailed it with this. I've had to have a few kicks up the backside, I mean gentle reminders, that I wasn't focused on my niche which is why people may be coming, maybe browsing, but mostly recognizing that this isn't what they were looking for. Will keep your points in mind....and thanks for the gentle reminder :)

Thanks for following, Rick! I think we all need these reminders from time to time.
