If you are not hitting your market with the right message in the right language, the one that they understand you may struggle to sell a lot of products or a lot of services.

Every Monday I travel through a small rural market town, its claim to fame is the stockyards where they hold a weekly auction sale . So every week you see the lifestyle and small farmers going to market, typically it can be a mob of sheep ranging in size from 3 to 10 in a caged trailer, so on average I see roughly 3 to 5 trailer loads, so we could multiply that because it is only the ones that I see.

After New Year, the first sale of the year folks are looking to get some dollars rolling in to balance the books after that Christmas spend up, so off to market they go. Well, bless me, on the first sale of the year I note 12 trailer loads of sheep heading to market there will be more.

If you know the score you are well-placed to get a good return for your stock, however many folks are not........... so they are in the hands of the market, which like all markets is either a seller's market or a buyers market.

When it comes to that first sale of the new year, he who knows the score leaves his sheep on the trailer for another day or goes to the first sale to get a feel for the market. Because of the oversupply, it was a buyers market, prices were through the floor, a lot of disappointment.

He who knows the score avoids the first sale but goes to the second sale of the year, folks have been burnt so no one turns up, it is now a seller's market. Prices were strong and everything sold very well.

The moral of the story is, we need to learn all we can about the market we are in.

A question to test your marketing skills, what sale would be better to attend number three or four or both?

Or would it be better to break your mob, so 10 sheep becomes a six and a four or a 2 X 3 and a four or 2 X 4 and two?

By testing and tweaking your presentation the opportunity exists to reach more members of your target market.

The teaser is that there could be a systematized approach or could it be a case of all the above.

So a reflection could be that we have to know the market, the trends, what folks in that market are buying and what they are prepared to pay. We need to be consistent in our approach it also doesn't hurt to have a few tricks in reserve, always evaluating and looking for angles and creative ways of doing things. Remember the farmer who left his sheep on the trailer when he saw the competition. He returned the following week, bingo.

Experience counts for a lot and we only get experience from being in the game,

the second thing about experience is that you can not buy it, it has to be earned.

The third thing is that we can capitalize on experience if we remember what we learned and apply it.

So what has this to do with internet marketing, short answer a lot. The online world from observation is a buyers market and unless you can talk it up then everything is so cheap, it is unbelievable what you can purchase and the price you get it for. There can be some competition, it can be hard just to be heard, the key is how you approach the market and to know what voice to use, to reach out.

As sure as the sun is coming up tomorrow if you are sending the wrong message to your audience then chances are they will not buy from you or through your link.

One of the things we do as marketers after we jump that fence, that separates buyers from sellers is that we forget that at heart we are all buyers it is what we do and like to do.

Just think about that one, how many times did that card come out yesterday?

As a buyer, we have so much choice and so many vectors to be able to buy through, online shopping is so easy and time-saving and what's more you can get such good deals, delivered to your door or straight to your computer via download.

I am amazed, information is out there in the droves, and amazed that many sites are talking at me and not to or with me. I tend to go with the folks that are reaching out in that conversational manner. We are all the same at heart when we are in " buyers mode " we like to buy into, and form that connection with the seller we want to hear their message and we especially like it if they are speaking the same language as us.

This is just a personal reflection but a lot of folks and I tend to be in that camp, are not in tune with their market or audience, so they are missing out on engagement and sales, the thing is we are a global community, and as a buyer if you are not getting or finding the right message in your neighborhood then you just go further afield even go to another state or county.

There are no borders.

We need to learn everything there is to know about the buyers in our market, we can then broadcast the right message, it doesn't hurt to know what the sellers are up to as well. If you see someone selling up a storm then more than likely they have the right message going to the right audience.

How do you find the right audience, the best place to start is you because you are a buyer and you know what floats your boat. I think it can be about remembering that, if we are in a niche we should feel it and have a sense for the message we want to hear. That message from a sellers point of view needs to be congruent with what you are selling, but most importantly in the same language as your market or audience is speaking and understanding.

Selling is selling and simple works and has worked for a long time. I guess that we all face this issue until we cross that bridge that leads to " sellers paradise ", even at that stage we still have to be relevant. We need to be populating the segment of the market that we are targeting with the right message.

In this game marketing is important.

Great Perspective!

Hi Alex, I can't believe I missed this post. Your livestock market sound similar to the one that I try to go to each week, I never take all my animals at once in case its a bad day.

I've skipped two weeks this year due to snowy, cold weather. Hopefully there will be a lot of buyers next week with pent up demand. It's always important to understand your customers/buyers needs regardless of selling at an auction or online,

Hi Alex,
Knowing the people you are selling to, what about the people that like to bargain, you know the ones, they answer your add for a certain price, come to your place of collection and proceed to bargain for a cheaper price again.
It is their culture and most of us are slightly annoyed, they, don't know it is distasteful to us.
Thanks Alex,
Jae

Hi, Jae good to see you and thank you for your comment much appreciated.
That is a so classic, I am slightly tainted because I love to Banta, in fact, that person to person selling in the markets is my favorite kind of selling, so moral of the story give as good as you get once you feel comfortable it can be quite fun.
I guess that some cultures are more focused on that type of selling and for many it is hard to get into that way of doing business.
I was brought up with the mantra of first price best price, so found it hard when folks started to seek lower prices, I guess it is a learned way of selling I have definitely jumped the fence.
It is different when we are providing services, from experience when someone starts to niggle it usually means that they will not pay you on the due date, once we get our heads around that one we can start to take measures when that behavior starts to present,
I think the good old fashioned saying is to nip it in the bud and I guess that would work for those bargain hunters or folks that just like to try it on.

Thanks Alex for explaining about your take on bargaining, I always feel uncomfortable about bargaining so hopefully with our type of selling we won't be bothered by this style of buying.
I had a house that was bought at auction, at the moment of signing the agreement to buy, the chinese fellow started bargaining. I was all at sea with this, as it was all out of my experience. How odd.
Anyway it all went through.
Cheers Jae

Nice post Alex, your approach is sound. You are so correct when you say the online world is a buyers market. Everyone is looking to buy the information out there. Most of it is free, so getting someone to pay for something it hard to do. That is what we need to perfect, the call to action to buy.

It can be hard to compete with free, getting folks to click on the dotted line can take skill, which is gained through experience.
The more that I observe, bringing integrity to the game can get us across that try line.
I have to agree with you Alex, perfecting the art form which is that call to action is the knife edge where we need to most comfortable.
thanks for your comment, it has got me thinking.

Every day is a learning curve and it is up to us whether we live "positive," or die, "negative."

Tom.

well said Tom, it is a long journey we should all endeavor to make the most of it. So true every day brings us something new, the learning curve can be steep at times but if we stick with it we can reach the top, going down the other side is relatively easy so I am told.

"the key is how you approach the market and to know what voice to use, to reach out." - This line is priceless Alex. :)

Hi, Mark, it does have a nice sound to it, something that we should focus on, the second phase is being able to detect the language that the customer is speaking and adapt our sales pitch accordingly, being able to roll with it can be so helpful.
Thank you for the kind words.

Great information, thanks
