The First Rule of Online Marketing

The first rule, don't panic.

I could leave this post there, that simple sentence paints a thousand words, but I will not. When many of us come to the online world, we have super busy lives that are filled with many things. It seems that only when we truly stop and take that deep breath that the reality of the life that we are crafting makes some modicum of sense or not, as the case may be.

A view from the top.

When you speak to switched-on marketing guys, the standard view is that it is easier for you to become first in your customer's minds at the time of engagement. It is harder to convince them that you are better than the rest at a later stage; that is true in the ocean of potential contacts and sales.

"It's like fishing; they call it that because that is what it is; if every time you put your fishing line in the water, you caught a fish, they would call it catching."

So easy to panic when things are not matching our expectations. More so in the online world, because much of it is virtual, nothing beats that face to face contact, especially in business. The game's name is selling enough; just like working for a boss, we need to work enough to make money to live.

Online marketing or Not?

We have answered the question of "Should I do online marketing?" we are, and the big elephant in the room for everyone, and one that causes much angst in terms of online marketing is " are we doing what we do effectively?"

Online business relies on effective marketing.

Someone once said, "Ignoring online marketing is like opening a business but not telling anyone." This statement could not be more accurate in today's global environment, where we are all struggling to come to terms with our new normals moving forward. With any online business, it can be helpful to focus on online marketing.

Information plus drives sales!

There is so much information available online. As consumers, we have become savvy researchers; everyone is looking for the best deal; we all actively seek the most suitable info to make the best buying decision. Before making that purchase, I am not alone; I have researched online and become familiar with the product or service I am seeking to buy before connecting with the vendor or provider.

As marketers, is that cause for panic?

Well, we wouldn't be human if we didn't from time to time?

I am not sure how you roll? For me, recognizing that is how the markets function has been one of the best bridges I have crossed. We don't win every time; acknowledging that we are presenting offers and promotions to people just like us with the same goals and aspirations can be a breakthrough moment.

There is no need to panic or fear missing out ( FOMO ) when reaching out, get on with the job, creating and sharing valuable content; things will fall into place.

It works for me. How about you?

Alex Evans.

Hi Alex,

Once again, you have written another wise, thought provoking post. I must admit that too often, I have had to fight feelings of panic when working on both online and offline business ventures.

Yet, your next to last sentence describes what we, or I, really need to be doing.

I need to actually share the valuable content that I have created or that I have been think about creating. Thanks for the reminder.

Since I respect you so much, I hope this will serve as the kick in the rear end that I have needed. :)

Your post was very helpful for me, Alex. I’m still building my first site and in the trainings now. It’s good to know that the same principle you speak of, “everything will fall in to place when we share valuable content”, applies to AM too. Exhale. Thank you!
Kristina

Hi Kristina, good to see you. No matter the age or stage everything remains the same. From that marketing perspective the mindset that we continue to develop and work on can be key.

We don't always get things right, staying the course, can make all the difference.

How is your journey going thus far.
Alex

True again! I like to say we have a simple God. :) The same principles applied to micro and macro worlds. Now I just need to remember to apply these principles to my new website.

I chose the free site to get started. I have run into a couple of things I don’t like that slowed me down until I decided to keep moving forward. I’ll figure out how to edit later. I notice I can get bogged down with minutia or analysis paralysis, as you said.

As I shared, I not only have my own biz but we care for an elderly parent at home who is in hospice. I haven’t been able to spend as much time with my training as I want to but I know it will have to be enough for now. I’ll keep at it with small steps. They will eventually add up to something big.

How are things going for you?

Thanks for dropping in.
Kristina

You make very valid points here, Alex! My reduction in advertising in the print form has not yet been negated by my presence in Google--same with my books! I have to get BUSY!

Jeff

Hi Jeff thank you for sharing your experience. You have helped me immensely.

We can be online, as many are, yet still not make any headway. Being online and online marketing are like peas in a pod. You can't have one with out the other.

Success is somewhere in that mix.

The transition is the satisfying work in progress. Once again thank you.
Alex

You're very welcome, Alex, and you certainly speak the truth, my friend!

Jeff

I’m on the way Alex!
:-)
Richard

Good to hear, Richard, keep doing what you are doing, marketing the online presence can be the thing that brings the whole thing together.
Alex

Nicely said, Alex! We do need to keep on working hard day by day and eventually, things will start shaping up.

Thanks for this encouraging post.
Carol

You are most welcome, Carol, when things go wrong, or sales fall away, the. Key can be not to panic, take and make some remedial action and get beck on track.

Thank you for dropping by much appreciated.

Alex
