Should You Write for Yourself or Your Audience?

When it comes to writing blogs, there are many opinions and much advice. The most conflicting piece of information we are given is to write for our audiences as opposed to writing for ourselves.

One thing for sure is always to keep the reader in mind.

Content that is hard to read or understand is the quickest way to send readers running for the hills.

In the beginning, we do not have an audience or even understand who they may be. Early days, we may only have access to open or closed forums to ply our aspiring craft.

Writing in closed environments allows for a lot of freedom; people in these situations tend to have a similar set of interests. The tendency is to be a little more relaxed.

The dividing line

One question we should always address is would we write in a particular style or use click-baiting headlines on a publication that we own. Answering this question, I would think it is the beginning of writing awareness.

When it comes to writing our blogs, should we be writing for ourselves, or should we be writing for our audience? I guess it probably comes down to what our goals are.

In the beginning, writing can be a tough remember back to those first efforts, 300 words were hard then 500 then the 1000 word breakthrough.

Wow, then the 5000-word blockbuster.

The ocean of words has to start somewhere, and writing for ourselves can be satisfying. Just about everyone has been to school and learned how to read and write. For some of us, that writing muscle has long since atrophied. Reconnecting can be a big ask and for many, a bridge too far.

Even for good writers, crafting good web copy can be an evolving process. Just like, IT, folks that come to online marketing each are colliding worlds.

If we aren't putting any pressure on ourselves to please anyone else, our writing can be enjoyable. We can explore what is on our minds, without feeling the reader's watchful eyes are upon us.

There can be something completely rewarding about this process; we can be honest uncompromised by outside influences. Writing for yourself is more natural; let's face it writing without a reader in mind is always going to be more comfortable if you're not thinking about your audience. Or where our posts and articles will fit in the blogosphere.

We don't have to worry about whether anyone is going to like it. Our only goal is to get the words down, what else do we have to worry about.

The main thing about writing for ourselves is that you start to establish structures, and with that freedom, you can begin to exercise your creative thinking, which flows into your writing.

Creativity is the fountain of uniqueness in a world of dismal sameness.

Writing for others.

Writing for others is a skilled process; writing content other people will enjoy takes considerable skill. We have to be dedicated to researching our audience and finding out what they want. The reader will always be at the back of your mind. The flow of the audience will influence the way you write. Writing for others is a learning curve; creating content for an audience doesn't come naturally to many of us.

One thing about writing there is always more to learn.

Sometimes we will get it wrong and completely miss the mark. That is okay; writing for others, creates more possibilities. The words you create are reaching out on your behalf; you are an entertainer and are offering something unique to the world. If you write with a reader in mind, your blog is more likely to become successful.

If we want to create a following and promote our content, we cannot just ignore what the reader wants and expects from us.

Writing without remaining true to ourselves can end up feeling immensely tricky and unrewarding; it can end up sucking the writing life's blood out of us, and therefore our text may end up suffering as a consequence.

The balance

Getting the balance right can be the one thing that catapults the words you create. The balance will invite the reader to share the content you create and become immersed in your world. The ability to do that is where your skill as a writer comes in. If you can do this, then you will not only find the writing process more satisfying, you will also give your content the best chance of reaching those readers you want to share in your words.

So write for ourselves, the cauldron of our creativity. Write for the audience. Find the balance which allows us to all end up on the same page.

Thank you for reading.

Great post Alex and lots of inspiration for my future writing projects.
Thank you
Louise

Hi Louise,

Pleased to be able to help with your content creation.

Writing for our selves opens up a world of possibilities.

Alex.

It certainly does, more opportunities every day.

The audience is you because the outside is a mirror of who we are.

That is a unique perspective Aadya.

Definitely a win-win if we like looking out and we like what we see looking back at us.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Alex

thanks Alex have a nice day

You too Aadya, how is your journey going.

A bit nervous today. Time to go in nature. For a walk. Greetings from Belgium.

One of the best ways to bring things back into equilibrium. Best wishes.

It is quite releasing. You are a Good friend.

Good post Alex.
I think that writing for yourself in a way is writing for the audience too. If you are writing about a passion you are trying to explain why it is a passion and considering questions you wanted to know at the start. These are questions they want answered too else they wouldn't be there.

Hi Linda,

We are all individuals and all have different perspectives that are in the whole unique to us. The thing is that there are other folks that will share the sameor br looking for that answer.

Writing for ourselves can be like the proverbial getting two birds with one stone.

The more original us we bring to the table, the wider the appeal.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Alex

That's very true. I always say the same subject is made different by the real person coming through.

That’s a winner Alex. If I can get this thing balanced, which I have not.
Thanks for your usual great post.
Joe

Finding that spot where everything comes together, definitely takes the time.

When we stumble onto that winning formula it can be hard to break away.

I think for any creative the challenge is to find that balance.

Thank you for stopping by, Joe.

Alex

Thanks for message, enjoy your day.

You are most welcome, Simiao, glad that you enjoyed this post.

Have a great day as well.

Alex

If I'm excited about the content and feel my audience will enjoy reading it, it comes easily. But quite often I over think the content and it is slow going.

Enjoyed your post. Very true.

Lily 😊

Hi, Lily good to see you.

Sometimes the content flows and at other times we can start overthinking it, one of the best ways to put the handbrake on.

if we start creating for ourselves we can develop a flow that does reach out.

Thank you for stopping by.

Alex

Hi Alex. Writing for yourself and your audience is, in my opinion , two similiar and interconnecting goals. If you write something that pleases you and grabs your attention, and if you are able to 'engage' with your own article, then mostly likely others will as well. Jim

Hi, Jim thank you for sharing your insights, so true if we engage with our own work it stands that others will respond.

Building a body of work that evolves out of our own concepts, can add that extra spark out in the blog space.

Which at the end of the day can be good business.

Alex

I've never written much for myself and English was always a struggle for me in school, even college.

With 30 plus years in corporate IT I've written a lot of emails... I guess that's more like writing for others. I'm not sure if that style of writing is helping me now or hurting. Guess we'll see.

Loved your article though.

Michael

Hi Michael,

Thank you for stopping by, I think that we all arrive in the online marketing world from different, arenas, with different skill sets.

Finding our way with writing can be a journey in its own right.

Transitioning into the blogging flow is definitely a work in progress.

Finding the balance between creating for ourselves and writing in such a way that it reaches out to our readers

We all find what works for us as individuals.

Best wishes Michael.

And thank you for dropping by.

Alex.

It is indeed a balancing act. Horses for courses, as they say. A constant learning curve.
Your point about what the 'goal' is, rings true. I will admit that there are certain areas that I struggle to write. Certain subject matter pains me, when it comes to having anything good to say.
I am at my happiest when I am 'going off on one' but I do understand that doesn't 'do it' for some. Cest la vie.
I have found recently, when trying to put some flesh on the bone of some writing I'm doing, that I have a hard time with 'descriptions' as oppose to 'narrative'. Luckily we have digital pages, otherwise my wastepaper bin would be full.

Hi, Twack,

Awesome, you paint a vivid picture, digital has saved many trees.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I guess all writers are challenged with certain aspects of their writing.

Making that realization that we are all in the same boat can be liberating.

Alex

Good read...I myself struggle with writing. But in time I hope to get better at it. I am currently working on it.

Hi Carolyn, in the beginning, it can be challenging, like anything the more we engage the better we get at it.

The best thing to do is constantly work at improving our craft.

Thank you for stopping by and sharing.

Alex

I agree with you!!

All good have a great week.
