That quote has stood the test of time, the classic is that it is much used and often misquoted;

The original version.

"A jack of all trades though the master of none, is often better than a master of one ".

Puts a slightly different perspective on things.

What defines the expert?

Super simple, someone who is really good at doing one thing.

Boil a jug of water once, and then you could conclude that you are an expert at boiling water.

I could set up shop as a water boiling expert, the world's problems are sorted, now my pay scale has just shot through the roof.

Now let's see;

Ah, waterboilsolutions.xyz

or wbe.com

Maybe......waterboiling.consultants

In the online world, there are so many experts, and every one of them is right on the money. The thing about online experts could be if you tell it and say it often enough you become that expert.

Breaking it down, no story = no expert.

Real stories can only exist with experience.

The only way to build that experience is to continually strive to develop your craft, knowledge, skills, and experiences, at the end of the day, you don't have to proclaim it. I am amazed at the number of folks that declare that they are teachers, scrape the surface, and they have much to learn.

What skill set to strive for;

We may not be working towards becoming that expert, we may be looking to grow that Jack of all trades mind and skill set. In the beginning, we probably don't have the understanding, know-how, and resources to be able to leverage a position.

In the beginning, we can have those days when we are the front of the house, chief cook, waiter, dishwasher, and unpaid owner all rolled into one.

We strive to create many skills; it is part of the journey. The successful seem to focus on that one thing, day and night.

Many people are not necessarily experts, but observation would say that they are very proficient at what they do.

Proficiency is probably the new standard to build on.

It can be a puzzle, do you strive to become an expert, or do you strive to become that Jack of all trades?

For the average person coming to the online marketing world, un-niching can be paralyzing. When that skill set is built, it can be much easier to zero in on your market segment.

It takes time to create your space online. The good thing is that you can create something unique to you, and the idea is that what we are all searching for more than ever is uniqueness in the vast ocean of sameness, that is the internet.

Fake it till you make it, or settle in and follow a prescribed path step by step and work it. That can be the hardest thing for any aspiring online marketer, to do.

Just follow.

For folks that have been hanging around for a while, it is par for the course. For people finding their way, there are many bridges to cross and all the fires of nagging doubts to be extinguished.

To succeed in marketing, we do not have to be the expert, it is more helpful to become proficient at what we are trying to do. If we immerse that growth happens by default, and come what may that process is defined by the Wealthy Affiliate flow.

Simple really.

Who said, " pineapple shouldn't go on pizza," this is an expert speaking, "pineapple should go on everything."

Hi Katie, good to see you.

That is so true, we all learn so much as we progress, and the strange thing is at the end of the day most of us end up becoming very specialized.

Having a broad knowledge base can help us to become very adaptable.

Thanks for sharing.

Alex

it certainly does Alex.

I feel that become you can become the expert who can specialize in one skill, you definitely has to go through the drills of fire ( jack of all trade ) which is part and parcel which makes you stronger at the end pot of the rainbow.

Great article here.

Hi Chua. Bingo, in the beginning we can wear many hats, at some point we tend to know stuff.

A natural progression.

At that time, the tendancy can be to specialize as things start brining results.

Nicely said, Alex. A jack of all trades will also know where to find the answer. And for us, that is here on Wealthy Affiliate.

Hi, Glen thanks for the response, that would have to be the one thing that can define us, we may not know but are okay about admitting it.

searching for the answer that fits and WA is certainly the oasis to find what we are looking for.

Well, said.

Alex.

Great blog Alex. One of my favorite sayings is " What is the definition of an Expert".. 'Ex' being an unknown quantity and 'Spurt' being a drip under pressure".. Now I'm not intentionally trying to upset the real experts by saying this. All the best. Jim

I come across many self-proclaimed experts, that would be a fairly accurate definition, for sure.

Thanks for adding that Jim.
