Exposure or Overexposure

In creating that online presence we need to expose ourselves, our work and content, our core values, we just about have to throw everything at it including the kitchen sink. I guess it comes down to how badly we want to succeed and what we are prepared to bring to the game and how much we are prepared to engage.

The online marketing world is not that easy if it was then everyone would be affiliate marketers, I don't know if you have noticed but we are a rare breed and one could almost say an endangered species. Many come to try their luck and just as many walk away in frustration.

In saying that we are in a very unique space, there is competition for sure and some niches the competition is stiff, but if we stick to it the opportunities for us to succeed are immense as well, armed with knowledge and resources that are up to date certainly tips the scales in our favor we have all of that and more here in Wealthy Affiliate.

The key that unlocks the door is creating content and presenting it to the right audience. It is finding that balance of what works for us as individuals. That balance of providing and giving information and presenting our audiences with opportunities that will enhance their lives or solve some pain points for them.

One of the golden rules is to always respect your audience no matter what arena you are plying your trade. Failure to do so will initiate your demise, it won't happen today maybe not tomorrow maybe not next week or year, but it will arrive like a freight train with a full head of steam, virtually unstoppable.

From observation, that disrespect starts quite innocuously, without meaning or desire to do so, it can take time but once embedded it is hard for the individual to overcome and that is the sad thing.

I was saddened over the holiday season, to come across a member who is slowly fading into the shadows and if anyone had thrown everything including the kitchen sink at it, it was them.

"Still, no sales".

The thing about audiences and one thing that we all share in common is we are all part of many and with our ability to connect we join many more on a daily basis. Another thing that we share is a subtle sophistication, especially if we have been exposed to a specialized knowledge. We know when someone is playing up or they are trying to pull the wool over our eyes. The unfortunate thing is that sometimes folks don't realize that really important point, I am not clever so don't fully understand the mechanics of it.

I think that it just turns folks off, to put it bluntly.

But one thing I do understand is that overexposure can sink your ship.

So in our careers or online business building aspirations, we need to develop a sense of respect and strike that balance between exposure and overexposure. There is a time to promote and a time to pull back. I guess that comes with experience and that is a work in progress for many of us.

I may be right or I may be off the beam, but I suspect that just maybe a little less exposure or a more measured approach may have resulted in a different set of outcomes in this instance and at the end of the day we all want to be successful or otherwise we wouldn't be here in the first place.

Just a little food for thought........we never get things right 100% of the time, at the very least we should try to learn from the mistakes we have made or are making.

Thanks for this information Alexander and I am sorry to hear about this person who is slipping into the shadows. I do hope it is not someone I know well. xxxx

Hi Cheryl, you are most welcome, it can be frustrating watching things unfold sometimes when they do not have to be that way, just small changes in the way folks engage or seek engagement can have a big impact.

Some very good points Alex! Thanks :-)

Hi John, you are most welcome, thank you for stopping by.

Food for thought indeed. Thanks for sharing. A prosperous new year to you as we strike the balance.

Hi, Gifty thank you for the kind words and best wishes for 2018. Always good to strike that balance in all things.

Hi, Alex...It is a delicate balance, and often when we get caught up in our own set of beliefs and stop listening to the audience, we lose focus on what it is they really want or need...

I have seen this quite a few times over the years, and some people that I really used to respect went through this. Their focus became more about the money than the morals behind the money...

As some politicians with limited vocabulary and intellect might say: Sad.

Cheers!
Dave : )

Hi, Dave, that is such a valid point that you have raised, in creating that online space we are in a degree in control, the message and voice that we are using needs to be attuned to the audience that we are trying to reach.
I think that we both know folks that have been overtaken with that need for money there is a shift in their core values, having said that it seems to be cyclic in nature, so comes around in time.
Thanks as always for sharing your insights, Dave.

Great post. I needed to hear these words!

Hi Erik, good to meet you, much of business is about building relationships, folks will purchase from people that they trust, it can be about delivering that message in a timely and measured fashion, overexposing that message can have the opposite effect.
Thank you for passing by.

Good post, Alex. Thanks. Carol

Hi Carol, thank you for stopping by you are most welcome, just some reflections from a conversation with another member who is under some stress. Sometimes we can reach out to help it can be hard.

Supporting each other is one of the major reasons for the community, I think. It's hard to see friends succumb to discouragement and leave us. Hope your support might help him (generic!) change his (still generic!) mind! Feeling contrary tonight...refusing to be politically correct! Carol

Hi Alex,
When you mention over exposure, do you mean don't be too pushy?
Jae

Hi, Jae, on reflection the online industry is about building relationships, in doing so we need to find that balance between helping and selling.

I think that we have all at some time had that experience of dealing with an overzealous sales assistant,

The outcome is that you usually walk away all you need is some information and then be left to consider and make a decision.

Another angle could be that affiliate that is always pushing, promoting, I think in social media circles it is referred to as "driveby posting ", never engaging just pushing, pushing and posting, posting, posting, if you travel online you get to see quite a bit of this, it will work for a time but folks soon tire of it. and engagement will drop off.

Just a personal view but we need to develop that sense or balance where we are striving to help and build those realtionships, rewards will come and they won't be forced.

Thank you Alex, I get what you're saying. It is a finely tuned website that gives information & takes "services rendered" $$$$
I agree that it is really nasty to promote constantly and not give anything back.
Thank you for defining this for me.
Will be a "good girl"
Cheers Jae

I emphasize customer targeting and centered content over and over Alex It cannot be emphasized enough!

That cannot be denied Mike, a champion of targeted and centered content.

Thanks, Alex, A sense of balance between online and offline is difficult to do. Many of the younger generation have no qualms about their online presence, but for those of us who grew up with the axioms like "it is nobody's business but your own" it is harder to expose our lives to the world.

A sense of respect is probably the right way to go about it, respect for ourselves and for others.

I agree, Alex. Respecting ourselves, our community, our audience, and our websites is essential. Carol

Hi Alex, thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights, you have raised a very valid point, folks that are in an older generation can find it very hard to share and expose ourselves to the online world, probably like you say flies in the face of the values that we were brought up with.
Bridging that gap between ourselves and our audiences can be the way to go. Finding that balance will bring results, it may take time but well worth the effort.

Well said Carol, I think that it cannot be underestimated, I agree with you 100%

Thanks, Alex.

You are most welcome.

Very true. I especially like the statement, "...We need to develop a sense of respect and strike that balance between exposure and overexposure." Finding the right balance is important.
Great post, Alex!

None of us are perfect, but developing a relationship with our audiences is core to our success and most successful relationships have mutual respect somewhere in the mix.
Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts Audrey.
