Don't Let Others Write The Story of Your Online Journey For You

Your journey is your story; write it with your pen.

When we arrive in the online world, we have this expectation that based on the sales blurb that it will be relatively easy to create a business online.

One of the biggest shocks is that this is not the case.

True or false?

So what invariably happens is that we seek guidance from others, we tend to look at what they are doing and try to emulate it.

It is kind of like the little kids when they look over at that group of teenagers, and they get that glazed over look in their eyes.

They're teenagers; they do cool stuff.

Opinions and advice are useful
in that they allow us to add or subtract from our knowledge and experience base. The thing I have found particularly helpful is to take things on board, not at face value but rather in such a way that it gives you a starting point to do further research.

In doing so, we can elevate our expectations and also create achievable outcomes; it does take time to become comfortable with our online experience.

A lot of times you will come up against folks saying what is right and what is wrong, what you should and shouldn't be doing. It is something that happens across all aspects of the internet spectrum. It is not isolated.

The hardest thing can be developing your sense of perspective. Where you are going, and what you are hoping to achieve. Most importantly what you are doing to achieve it.

Being honest there is so much noise online, some of it useful and some of it can be destructive. Not in that tear a building down kind of way but more in that challenge your navigation kind of way.

Are you on course,

Many times, I see people lose there way, it can be as simple as getting a jibe from someone, or even that feeling that you are not up to it, or you lack the knowledge and ability.

When you think about writing, many that take up the blogging path, haven't written creatively since their college days and for some, that is many eons ago. It can be hard for many to re energize that writing muscle.

Even at school, I would think that if there was a choice between writing and the playground.

There would be one clear winner?

Of course, there would be
.

You can be continually challenged.

A lot of that challenge can be internally created, or more than likely at certain phases; it can be others that are creating it in your experience. That can be family members, friends associates, and like here in Wealthy Affiliate other members.

Sometimes it can feel as though you are not in control; it is others that are dictating your journey, actions and business direction. For many, it can be a huge hurdle to overcome.

As soon as you let others start to take control of your journey, then you are making your way to the exit door.

It is something that is played out over and over again.

When you zero in, stay your course.

Sometimes you can be unsure that you are making the right decisions or following the right advice, training, knowledge, or, even person.

Once you start making decisions and begin taking action, no matter how small, things will start happening. It is just the way it is.

The hardest thing is staying the course and backing yourself and your decisions. We are not going to get it right every time.

Hey, isn't that life.

One of the best things to do when it comes to the online world is to line yourself up with some top of the range, training, knowledge, and resources.

That is the primary reason I am still here at Wealthy Affiliate; it ticks so many boxes and continues to amaze me daily.

For me, it continues to nourish my online journey in ways that are hard to express.

Over the past eight weeks, I have been struggling to learn a new CMS and acquire some knowledge around CSS.

The why because I am looking to expand what I am doing online, as we know it is about building on what we learned yesterday.

At times, I thought that I was turning into an internet browser.

Alex explorer version 660.

Twenty-two tabs open, two webinars paying simultaneously, three tabs frozen, no idea where the sound is coming from, looking for the little icon to switch it off, not sure what tab it is on.

I am tapping on a keyboard and scrolling on the phone.

Only one thing left to do meld into the screen.

Some days were like 15 hours in front of the screen. At times my eyeballs felt as though they were going to explode. I ended up going to the optometrist. ( all good ).

We have so much knowledge at our fingertips, here in WA, sometimes it can take a little searching to find it, the range and scope would be hard to match.

Continued learning can be an excellent key.

At times, it was diabolical, what kept me going was the ability to call in here and touch base, to share and help, and soak up the vibe and the ambience that is Wealthy Affiliate.

It is truly unique, and it has given me a renewed perspective.

It is always good to be grounded.

If I had let others in It could have been so easy to get tipped over, even with the level of knowledge and understanding that I have amassed over the period.

For us to write, craft, and make it the best that we can; don't let others dictate your terms and conditions.

Write your own.

That is the best thing you can do, and it is the thing that will get success to come searching for you. Your vision from the top can only be eclipsed by sharing that view with many others.

Be yourself, create and inhabit your story.

We don't know what we are all capable of, until we just get stuck in and take action to achieve what it is that we are striving for.

Best wishes, fellow travelers, and many thanks.

Alex.

Yes Alex. We all have our own story to tell in our own way.

Carol

Hi Carol,

That is so true Carol, every one of us have our own story and own version and the thing is that our story aligns with the same story as many others.

People search for that unique version.

There is a whole lot of opportunity out there.

Alex

Excellent post!
It is important to back yourself when you start to struggle and remember that you started this journey for a reason.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jesse, glad that you liked this post.

Backing, ourselves can be one of the most positive things we can do in both life and business.

It is a work in progress, one that is well worth the effort and results that it brings.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Alex

Hi Alex, great post. Definitely we have to write our own story and be honest with ourselves in telling that story. Doing our own thing is important, gives us that sense of accomplishment.

Thank you for the share.

Best wishes,
Michael

Hi Michael,
Finding our own way in the online world can be one of the best things we can do to create the success that we are searching for.

I have to agree with you, learning and creating your own way can bring a sense of accomplishment that can be hard to beat.

Thank you for stopping by.

Alex

Thank you, Alex. I do hear you!

Classic Netta, after a while we all get to see the forest and the trees at the same time, the training wheels truly fall off.

Thank you for stopping by.

Alex thanks for the nice post.

Recently for the first time, I made some cheese at home. I listened to so many cheese making gurus on youtube till my head spun. But I picked up a thing or two along the way. What step or tip one guy missed another covered and over time I became somewhat of an expert (in theory). Now when I started to make the cheese was when the rubber really hit the road and I came to really understand what was going on in the cheese-making world. I went back to some videos and offered some advice on where they could have missed a step or where they could improve their explanations. the takeaway from the cheese-making stint - learning is important but doing is critical

Hi Bosco, good to see you hope that your journey goes well.

That would have to be one of my favorites of all time.

The only way to go is to be in the game, nothing can beat it.

I really like the cheese-making analogy, we can train and research, but the good stuff starts to happen when we start to take some action.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts Bosco, much appreciated.

Alex

I forgot to mention the different approaches each one took in these cheese making videos and the conflicting information provided and I had to reconcile these differences by getting "my feet wet" so to speak by actually doing it myself.

At the end of the day only when we do we will really know.

That would have been very interesting Bosco, and I have to agree wholeheartedly, the only way to find out is to do it ourselves.

Hi, Alex,
This post is truly needed right now.

I was taken off into all directions. Almost seeing it in my mind. I love these kinds of post that when you read them you are actually seeing it all in your mind. Like a Play almost. If you get my gist lol.

The open tabs, two webinars going, frozen tabs lol. Yes I have certainly done that.

Yes not writing since I was at school too that was many eons ago lol.

What a perfect explanation with the playground. :)) Yes I would rather be out playing right now. .😁

The truth is and you explain this also Alex. Is do not let others mark your path for you. ''Do not let anyone dictate your terms and conditions.'' I love how your wrote that.

All too often or should I say before I used to watch this person diss promoting W.A. Saying how hard it was to do it etc. Generally moaning about it.

That person is no longer here. By the way this person never even did promote W.A. what used to annoy me was. How does that person know who will succeed and who won't.

Imagine if the likes of Grace or Jerry listened to this person and the bad advice. Then they would never have achieved the Super Affiliate Status.

Nobody can tell anyone how good or rubbish they will be and if we allow ourselves to be led by their beliefs then yes basically you may aswell hand over your terms and conditions.

I am not getting at anyone by saying this but what may not work for some will work for others. It could work for all of us.

I have a referral who was asking me about their niche. As the person thought it was too competitive. I am no expert in this person niche so my advice was simple.

If you have the knowledge in it and you enjoy doing it. You may never know how good you are unless you try it. I will not agree with that person and tell them ''Yes its hard try another niche.''

I mean who am I to dictate and tell a person that. After all that person could become the next Biggest Blogger in that niche.

I don't know and nor does that person. That's like playing with peoples lives. If I struggle I have my certain go to people.

I do know when I falter I have had some wonderful P.m.'s of support.

Yes even guidance and not telling me but guiding me. That goes a million miles for me. (Andre was a massive support as was you Alex and many others. 🤗)

That to me is what this amazing platform is built on. If I fail then I own that failure if I succeed then I own that too. Yes I write my own Terms and conditions. It is the only way to be.

Just because someone else doubts the process then that is not my problem. After all I am writing my own book nobody else's.

Love your wisdom Alex. Thank you.

Debs 😉

Hi Debs, good to see you, hope the journey goes well.

Classic, aye, days you don't know if you are upside down it what.

I have been reflecting on why folks give up, one of the things at the top of the list is the writing boogeyman.

For many, it it's such a hill to climb, for some, every word turns into gold, for others they end up with no hair.

It is. interesting that you mentioned Grace and Jerry, at certain times all it takes us a nudge and your path is changed for ever, opportunity lost.

I remember when, I first arrived here there was a member dishing out advice left right and centre, you would look around and the poor chap was doing exactly the opposite to what he was telling others to do.
Long since departed.

Our words can have so much power over others, especially in a place like WA, we need to be mindful.

When you reach a certain stage, it can be raining, cats and dogs and you will never get wet.

Finding your own place and space is one of the best things we can mentor people to do and become.

Looking forward to reading the story if your continuing success, Debs.

Thank you for your thoughtful response, I appreciate you stopping by.

Alex

This is an excellent post and thanks to you for sharing.

Hi Johane,
Thank you and you are most welcome, glad that you enjoyed the post.

Alex

You are most welcome Alex.

Hi Alex,
Brilliant post. Thanks for sharing. It is so true, it is easy to get swayed by the wind in all directions if you have no grounding and no focus. Self doubt easily sets in when things do not happen the way we want or as fast as we would like at times. As you rightly say, it can be that jibe or anything really which can get you off your course.

I believe it is important to have those goals right from the start and to keep focusing on them. Easier said than done but that is the only way you can know that you are still on your own journey.

Hi, Sitheni you are most welcome and thank you for your thoughtful response, we can learn so much from each other as we reflect on our perspective journeys.

In a way, we are all on the same journey, I believe that the support and knowledge we can avail ourselves of in WA can be the thing that makes all the difference.

Creating those goals at the outset, is so very important, keeping on track can take some work indeed but well worth it.

Once agian thank you for sharing your thoughts much appreciated.

Alex

Thanks Alex. Much appreciated.

You are most welcome, Sitheni.

Another great post Alex, one to get the grey matter tingling. It made me think. I see it all as (simplistic of course):

'I know what I want to achieve'
'I think I know 'ways' of how to do that'
'What's the best way to accomplish it'

So, some of the wording is interchangeable but the last sentence is the one that requires more 'thought'. There is the point where we ask for advice, weigh up the 'pros and cons', make a decision based on our own evaluation of the advice.

Sometimes we get lucky and the advice we take works immediately. Other times we will need to make a change and keep doing that until we obtain the desired result.

In my opinion, of course.

Hi, Twack, a very good opinion, learning the difference and where the difference is, can be the point in time when our best work becomes evident.

The online world moves at such a rapid rate of knots, evolving the confidence to back ourselves can be what defines us.

Thank you for stopping by I value your comment.

Alex

Thank you and you're always so very welcome.

Great article and full of wisdom and insight I take my business serious but I also want to enjoy the ride..The pleasure that comes with enjoying your work is absolutely amazing

Hi Cinderella, I think that you have hit the nail on the head, we can take things way too seriously at times.

Finding that place or space where we are comfortable and can be relaxed and enjoy our journey can be the spot where we do our best work.

Thank you for sharing.

Alex

You are welcome
