Are You Involved In Distraction Marketing?

Do you always find yourself catching or chasing that shiny ball, shiny ball syndrome is where every time a new program, new product, or opportunity comes around, you have to jump on it and try to get involved?

The trouble with balls is that we can only keep so many in the air and rotating through our hands. At some point, it becomes a ball too many.

The next big opportunity, ah, but in many instances, you already have and are working on developing your next big opportunity. Distraction marketing, where you are never focused on the task at hand, you never concentrate on one thing long enough to get it to work.

Using the favorite verbiage " long enough to monetize it."

What keeps many people struggling, feeling unsuccessful and frustrated is that they get all excited at the beginning with whatever they are trying to promote or get involved in. It sounds like something they can do, something to get excited about. They work hard for a week or two or eight weeks.

Then the next thing you know, something else comes along to dazzle. This new thing has an even better commission structure, or it appears more relaxed, easier, and this might fit us better, so you find yourself always chasing the next big thing. I see folks come to WA spend a little time leave and then see them pop up somewhere else online, still searching looking for the answers that will solve all their problems.

Jumping from program to program or continually buying products, we are continually dissipating the available energy that we have to invest.

If you are reading you may find yourself in this situation, in the beginning, phases we can find ourselves doing this; it is almost a rite of passage; some folks get trapped in this situation, some realize the error of their ways.

Online marketing is a process and one which can be learned and applied.

The mindset is that is if you are looking outside your current parameters or activities, make sure that they complement or bring value to what you are currently doing.

They have to be connected.

Unrelated and Non-complementary

Jumping around messes up or destroys your growth, so you want to stay focused on one thing long enough to get that one thing going, and then you can move on to other things. Every time we change the tune, we change the message not only to the audiences that we are reaching out to but more importantly, we are changing the message to ourselves.

Both scenarios can become frustrating for all partners you included.

Given the current situation, it can be essential to focus and use that focus to follow, though long enough to lock in the results that we have planned.

Be on the lookout; some early warning signs;

  • Starting that project or task and never finishing it.
  • You have new ideas that demand all your attention.
  • Easily getting distracted, getting side tracked and then start doing something else.
  • Losing focus quickly, chopping, and changing your workflow.
  • Something we can all suffer from a shortened attention span?
  • Feeling anxious that we may be missing out on something. (FOMO)
  • Start reading something or viewing tutorials, webinars and lose interest.

Do You find yourself continually chasing time? In today's world, a shared experience.

A definite sign that problems are on the horizon!

How to overcome distractions.

So many people are suffering from this, and it's one of the biggest killers of productivity you seem to do a lot but not get much done.

The key here is that there's a distinct lack of focus, and the reason for that is there are not enough clear outcomes for what you're doing and also the reasons why you're doing it.

When you have absolute clarity and certainty about what you're working towards, then you know what you need to be doing in the now, you have to get on and get it done. In this zone, at least if you're going to procrastinate, you do it creatively, you do it so that it's still related.

We have to get focused on getting a clear picture of our desired outcomes and also to make sure we know why we are pursuing them. In doing this simple thing, it will help us to overcome those hurdles and challenges that will always confront us.

Given the current global situation, it can be so easy to be tempted by the next ball, the first question you need to ask is how many balls am I juggling currently?

Will that next ball bring value to my business, or will it lead me away from my current activities?

From observation, we all go through the same phases just at different times. No one has born immunity, it is something to be developed. That is why a Platform like Wealthy Affiliate and its associated platforms is so invaluable.

It creates that focus by default.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

I used to be looking for the next shiny object, Alex but then I realized that simple things work best. If we all just added content every day using the principles taught here, we would have great results. Don't need anything else. Just the perseverance.
Thanks for the great post.

Well said, Lenka, that can be so true, we can be challenged, we come across something good in the Wealthy Affiliate Platform yet we still continue to search.

Results can be obtained by following a prescribed formula for sure.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Excellent Post Alex, you have reinforced my thinking that I have to make my only website give more exposure to being clicked rather than start anew. My niche is Computer Aided Writing and I am the David going against Goliath which I have always done throughout my sales career. I made too many mistakes in the beginning and am suffering now. Therefore, I've got to correct them and get back in the game. Thank you for an excellent post that will keep me from being one of those persons.

Hi Edward,

Nothing like going up against, Goliath can be a great way to inject some hunger into our game.

Gaining clarity of what we need to do and where we are going can be the things that make so many things possible. Best wishes as you continue to make progress.

Alex

I just noticed that you have 508 Posts! To me that is a very good accomplishment, i know that you have been here a number of years. It is consistency and drive that I admire, Congrats Alex.

I guess most of us have fallen for all that stuff at one time or another Alex, mostly when we are/were new to the industry and are just trying to find our way around.
Cost me plenty to find out that often the quiet, rounded, good value stuff that you found initially is amongst the best out there I can tell you.
Mark

Hi Mark,

I think that it is better to come to WA with no knowledge than arrive with some knowledge. In the latter, we know enough to be dangerous.

We probably all have products collecting dust on our hard drives.

I have to agree with you mark some of the understated stuff can be amongst the best, I was looking at one yesterday been around about four years still going strong bringing value.

Looking at it, in the beginning, we don't know and buy in the hope that a product or service will solve our problems down the road if we purchase it is about creating outcomes.

Thank you for commenting much appreciated.

Alex.

I've definitely been on too many email lists in the past Alex just in the hope that the sender might let me know about the next best thing....lolsssss

Great Post. As others have said this used to apply to me, but I can safely say, it no longer does, thanks in part to WA.

Once you are in the right zone it's difficult to come out of it as my lovely wife will testify too.

As an example to help others and cement what you have said, just yesterday I earned some nice automatic commission from

My list which by the way is my insurance policy

And from a product sale on my WP training site

Its a very satisfying feeling knowing that I don't have distraction marketing to think about now, just strategic marketing

Thanks for sharing

Hi Dave,

Thank you for sharing your experiences that brings value to the conversation.

I think that as we learn one of the biggest lessons we need to learn in order to make those breakthroughs is that we are not buyers, but rather we are sellers or at the very least we are transitioning to becoming sellers.

The mindsets of both are miles apart.

Making reconnection and sticking to the basics and doing them well can set us all on the right path.

Becoming strategic can make all the difference.

Alex

Well put Alex

All very true Alex.
I spent my first 3 months mostly chasing shiny objects, every interesting training I spotted, rather than focusing on the main training.
I also bought shiny objects that were supposedly "ideal for newbies" and big money spinners. Most of them weren't. Some I got my money back and some I didn't. Lesson learnt. The very few were useful, so not all bad.
Now I look and laugh.

Hi Linda,

Thank you for sharing, I think that many of us went through that phase. I think it could be a human trait if there is an easy path we will search for it. especially success that comes from pushing a button, LOL.

The classic I observed the other day was "3 steps to 1K paydays"

Crazy, apparently sold like hotcakes. Even crazier looking at the training you would have to spend 1K to create a modicum of results.

To build that online presence we have all that we need here in WA.

Alex

Early on I fell for one that said something similar. When you got inside there were about a hundred videos, maybe more, that you had to go through first before you even started. I was fuming. A few maybe although even that was false advertising.
You are right, WA has everything we need right here.

I think that there are many sales pitches that don't exactly express the product or service inclusive of what is required to actually achieve the level of the projections.

Given our current state, many shady marketers are taking advantage of people's vulnerabilities.

Not fair at this point in time.

I agree, it isn't fair of them. Over time you learn, get an instinct for the scams but many don't ask for their money back, feeling it must be them unable to get it to work.
Its very sad.
