Why do people go online, the reasons can lead to a healthy debate. There is always an intent associated with their search engine queries. I was enjoying looking at why today.

There are five reasons why;

1. Entertainment.

2. It could be a problem that needs to be solved.

3. Curiosity about a subject.

4. A search for validation.

5. Shopping to buy something.

I have listed 5 reasons in no particular order, and there are so many variants that come in to play. If we looked at it, entertainment and shopping are probably the main driving reasons. That would be across every age demographic and out on a limb across every culture.

Three Sets of Internet Users;

As users, we are maturing with our internet use over time. Within the total population, there are three groups or subsets.

1.Buyers

2. Sellers.

3. People who are transitioning between buying and selling or vice versa.

You can stand in the middle of your local supermarket and scream out at the top of your voice;

"Any internet marketers here."

Guarantee, you will not get any responses.

More Buyers!

The reason being there are more buyers than sellers. The question that begs an answer is;

Why is it so hard to sell something online if that is the case?

Like I said, a healthy debate previously.

If I want to find something out, my first port of call is YouTube, if it isn't on there, it hasn't been invented or made yet, it is the go-to for many people. Then again, for people who are readers, then a proper old fashioned search on Google is their first port of call.

All of us are different, yet we share somethings in common. When it comes to searching online, we have intent.

For the people creating content and providing products and services, the intent is to create and place content in front of the right audience to get the best outcomes. As content creators, we need to look at the reasons people go online.

That may be a simplistic way to look at things.

For me stopping and reflecting on why people go online has had a real impact on why and how I approach content creation. I think that it is good to do that; for one it helps to keep things real. There is a tribe out there that feel the same and are looking for the same things that you are propargating.

That mindset of targeting,and making that tweak has opened up a whole range of new possibilities. Also, the realization that there is plenty of room for everyone has been beneficial.

For the same reason, when you go to the beach, there are not 50,000 people banging away on the keys of a laptop. Another reason laptops and sand will never be good friends ever!

When you create content, is it purposely set on the intent of the searcher, or is it in that random one size fits all model. It would be so cool to pick up the vibe of the community.

So feel free to agree or disagree and express your thinking when it comes to your content creation.

We are blogging central, after all.

Slightly late of parade, apologies for that. Over the last few months I have immersed myself in a few 'training' courses, trying to fill in the blanks so to speak.
One of the favourite formats is to ask those who are successful, how would they build their business were they to lose it all overnight and have to rebuild with none of their existing assets.
One thing that came through, almost without fail, was the need to first identify your ideal customer, second was to find out where they all gathered. This was primarily social media but there could be other places.
After that was done it was up to you to join wherever they were and start to build trust and authority within those groups, asking questions, answering questions and finding out what their problems were. Not to sell to them. All those that used this method maintained that this process could take weeks, if not months to accomplish but it was the best possible way to create customers that would remain loyal and keep coming back, time after time.
Thank you Alex, glad I found this.

Great post, Alex!

That's a handy reference ... the 5 reasons why people go online.

The main part I'm curious about is the statement, "Why is it so hard to sell something online ... ?" Wondering what the perspective is there or where that observation comes from?

I can't say I know for sure, but overall, I was getting the impression that things are relatively easy to sell online... especially when compared with shops, markets and all the other ways we sold stuff before the internet?

Thanks for the share!

Best wishes,

Jacquie

Hi Jacquie,
When we think about it and from observation of our own online connections we all have similar reasons for going online.

If we become aware then we can tailor content with each reason or reasons in mind.

If we, look at a niche and we are presenting the right product or service to the right people then it is relatively easy to effect sales. If we bare in mind the reason/s that folks have turned up and what they are looking for, it can help us to drill down and present the right offer for that point in time.

I am not saying literally that it is hard to sell online, it can be hard if we don't present the right content, some is definitely sales orientated and some can be information orientated.

That can be determined by the reason folks are online, and that can be determined by their searching intent. If as publishers we are aware our tasks can become that much more focused.

I hope that I have made sense.

Alex

Yes, some good thoughts there Alex,

"tailoring" is a good word. And I guess to do that we need to tune into who is showing up.

Best wishes,

Jacquie

Thanks Alex, great post.

Hi Robert, good to see you, glad that you enjoyed this post.

Best wishes.

How is your journey going?

Alex

I was trying to think of something to add to your list of five reasons why, and couldn't think of a sixth. Variants of one reason or another don't count. That said my friend, you did an excellent job.

Greg

Hi Greg there are probably more, but when we stop and reflect, the reasons given, translate to why folks go online.

When crafting content and focussing on the why, it can be a game changer.

Thanks for stopping by.
