Talking Out Your Fears

This is a longer one than usual - but bear with me - I think it's worth it...

I had a conversation today relating to various different situations in life. I thought about it and realised that this could be applied to our journey with Wealthy Affiliate, in a roundabout way.

Some of you may have heard the phrase "Talking out your fears" and know what it means but I never have before today.

The General Principle

If you're faced with a situation and you are ready to react with a knee-jerk reaction then the likelihood is that this reaction is not going to be in your best interests as it's more an emotive choice rather than a logical one.

To ensure that you react in your best interests it's best if you take a step back.

Obviously that's not always easy to do for some of us, but before you drop that absolute clanger, you will always have time to ask yourself the question..

What is most likely to happen next?

Whatever choice you have mentally made in terms of your reaction, stop. Before you react in that way run through this process:

  • If I react like that, what is most likely to happen next?
  • Then, ask yourself again, if that happens, what is most likely to happen next?

Keep doing it until you realise that the outcome is not at all the best one for you. It changes the whole outlook of the situation and allows you to realise that the likely end scenario is not ideally where you want to end up.

What has this to do with WA?

Initially...

We sign up with our FREE membership and have a good look around and everything is fantastic.

We get to know some people in the Community almost straight away, we look around the "Best in Class" training, read the motivational blogs etc. etc. the list goes on. We love it so we sign up to Premium because by then we know the full value of what we can achieve here and the tools that are on offer to ensure you succeed.

Not long after joining we start to realise that there is a lot of work required to get to where we want to be - lots of research, writing content, training modules and being taken far out of our comfort zones because it's such a new experience for us.

But what drives us after that point?

It's not what drove us initially - at the beginning it was thinking about the money which can be earned, the financial freedom. And of course, the end game doesn't change.

But, I'm sure most of you, like me, got so much more out of Wealthy Affiliate than you expected after you decided to commit your time and effort for the cause. We all say on almost a daily basis, there is no other forum or Community on the Internet that even comes close - especially one with over 2m members!

Inevitably there are people that quit - people who signed up thinking it's quick, easy money (I don't know why there is this misconception that if it's money earned on the internet it's quick and easy?) Very few businesses, if any, earn money quickly and easily.

So what leads these people to quit?

Obviously sometimes it's life circumstances which can't be helped - but I'm talking about the ones which just decide one day that it's not worth their time.

If they have been on here six months, how much content have they written, how many hours have they put into their new business?

Those are hours which you aren't going to get back. Hours of your life which have been totally wasted - for what? A big, fat nothing!

So my theory is - for anybody who reaches the point where they think to themselves, "what's the point, it's taking too long" firstly Talk Out Your Fears or it should be changed to Talk Out Your Concerns.

For example:

"This is taking too long, I thought it would happen faster - I'm not happy"

What is most likely to happen next?

"I'll quit"

What is most likely to happen next?

"I'll feel like I've wasted all that time and achieved nothing"

What is most likely to happen next?

"I will have to look for something else and start from scratch again because I'm still not where I want to be financially"

What is most likely to happen next?

"It's unlikely I will find something which earns me money quickly and easily so I will have to put some work into the next venture"

What is most likely to happen next?

"I will get fed up and quit again"

Obviously this can go on and on for as long as you like but you see where I'm going with it.

I have decided to use this method on different situations in my life as they arise - I have to admit, I am a bit of a knee-jerker to be fair. And it's led to some pretty bad situation choices.

So, that's it - my theory for the day - which I plan to put into practice from this day forward.

Although I know I won't need it for Wealthy Affiliate because I LOVE IT! I love my new WAmily and I love the person it's transforming me into.

Have a great weekend guys and gals!

Great post!
There are sometimes people who are just afraid of succeeding and this can lead to bad choices that make them miss all the good opportunities in their lives. We are on the right road and even if sometimes the path has some pitfalls, the WA community is there to support us.

Ingrid

There’s none better! Have a great weekend.

Hi Alex

What a awesome post, it was not to long at all

I gave up on other sites so many time when i felt i was banging my head on a brick wall

WA has changed me also, now i see the light at the end of the tunnel

Enjoy your weekend

Ross

Wow, that’s great Ross! Wishing you every success! Thanks for your kind comment!

This is an excellent post Alex. Such a great lesson an done that, hopefully will save a few from 'kicking' themselves in the morning.

A process of finding the lowest common denominator.
The 'Then what ?' series of questions.
It also takes the 'emotional' response out of the equation. Emotions are normally our downfall, when it comes t things like this.

I know Twack. Like I said, I’m a knee jerk reaction kind of person, led by my emotions and this will work really great for me. I liked it so much and thought why can’t it be used in WA too.

Thanks and hope you have a great weekend!

You too.

Hi Alex.

This is a very valuable lesson for everyone to learn. As someone who has been a bit of a serial quitter in the past I know now I have found the perfect system to build a long term sustainable business.

Having so many people to share learnings and experiences with is a huge added bonus and source of daily inspiration. There's always someone available to talk our your fears or concerns with.

Have a great weekend!
Dave

You’re right Dave, there are so many people willing to help. There shouldn’t be any reason for anybody to quit other than unavoidable circumstances.

Hope you have a relaxing one!
