I got accepted to adsence and when i add the html to my page under text it does not show up. Anyone have any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Hello, Alan. Hope you are having a good day! I had a problem with my adsence showing up. I put it in the right hand sidebar, but it only showed up with some garble and a white rectangle underneath it. I spent the whole day trying to fix it. All it took was time. The next day the ad was in place. If you don't see the ad, I would definitely go to Google Adsence & see if anything is wrong. Good luck, hope this helps!

Thanks I got it now..

What a great questions and what fantastic responses. I have learned so much from this simple question. Thanks Alan.

My pleasure glad it helped you!

Check out both of my sites to see where mine are placed this was done using Google Publisher Plugin.
http://findingyourmoralcompass.com/
http://surfaceprosdetailing.com/

Nice I like both pages!

I was accepted, placed the ad on my site and it didn't show up, just a yellow box. Then 2 days later I received an email saying I was disapproved because I needed more content. I then had to go back in and remove the yellow box. :(

Very interesting Lyndi.

thanks for that info Lyndi

I would be tempted to box the thing up in div brackets just to see where on the page my theme is trying to put it.

Thanks I will look into that

Hi Alan - I hope you've got this problem sorted out. Sorry I can't be of help as I'm going through the process of signing up to adsence. Just looking for a bit of advice, have you classed yourself as an individual or a business? Thanks!

Thanks it was individual I picked

Thanks Alan!

My pleasure!

It takes a while for ads to show up. The best thing is to use Easy Adsense plugin

Thanks I will download that one...

I too have adsense. But I found plugin called google publisher that will analyze your site for the best places to put these ads. After it looks at youw site it will display little text balloons throughout the site with a plus symbol all you do then is click which ones you want then go to the yop of the screen you will see tabs that say design, preview and to the far right save and activate. With the preview r
tab you can see the ad before you save it

Thanks so much!

I've had ads take 30 minutes to start. I use an Adsense inserter plug-in. It targets spots on your page where Adsense might want to put an ad and you choose. If you want to try it, Alan, let me know and I'll get you the name of it. My addled brain can't bring it to mind right now. ;)

I have had them on my page for two days now...nothing showing

Do you have an ad blocker on?

nope just a standard page

Not sure, Alan. I use Google Publisher. Adsense has great help forums. You might try there. I've had my questions answered on the forum. Good Luck!

Thanks I have them working now

WOOT!

I want to know Carla :)

It takes 10-15 minutes for ads to start usually. Just hang out a bit.

I have had the code on my pages for two days... nothing is showing

Sounds like bad code to me. Maybe a syntax error. Did you just do a straight copy/paste of the code or enclose it in div brackets or something else?

Do you use a caching plugin like WP Super Cache?

I just copied and pasted the code....and no I don't have super cache

I am looking for one of those few vistor counters you see on some pages anyone know of a free one you can get that will work with wordpress?

Great question....and thanks nicbiz for the site info. We all learn from these questions.

Yes, you can try statcounter which my hubby's website is using. It is free. :)

http://statcounter.com/
http://statcounter.com/wordpress.com/

Thanks...

I don't know the answer but I learned a lot :)

Thats a good thing!

By the nature of what these plugins do, they can slow down the page load on your site. They are not necessarily accurate, especially if you are using a cache plugin, as most counters don't count cached pages.

If you see this on a quality website, it is often added by manual code, not a plugin.

I recommend that you test your page load speeds before and after loading these plugins.

~Jude

Thanks Jude it sounds like it more trouble then its worth!

I have a free one on my non-profitsite - http://webstats.motigo.com

Thanks

I would second that of zachvano; many of the ones you see online that are 'fancy' are also 'not free'....

ty!

I would use a plugin to do that. There are many out there, so you'll want to find the right one for you.

1) Open Wordpress

2) Click Plugins on the left hand side

3) At the top of that page click, "Add new"

4) Type "Visitor Counter" in the search bar

5 Test out plugins to find the right one for you

Thanks so much for the info!

How do you start a blog roll?

How go I add a blog to my website

Did you get it figured out Alan? My theme says pages or posts so I did not want to give you wrong information.

Yes i got it and thanks for asking!

Looks like you have some answers, I was looking for the answers as well. Thanks for asking. Kim :))

you are welcome

The default in WP is that the blogroll is set as the front page display setting (many themes call this the Home page). You can see this setting by going in your WP admin area to:

Settings > Reading

If your front display is set to "Posts", then adding a new post automatically goes to the blogroll and shows up as the front page that visitors land on when they first arrive at your site.

If you have a static page as your front page display, and want to leave it that way, then do the steps that bazboy247 has provided.

Ask yourself, which page do you want your visitors to land on when they first arrive on your site via yourdomain.com

Generally, the default settings to have the front page display as "posts" is recommended on a new site because it is a dynamic page and when adding posts, it boosts ranking and visitors will see new content rather than the same static page.

You can also create categories for posts and/or pages and add them to the menu so that when a visitor clicks on the menu item, they see only the posts related to that category, listed in the same way as the blogroll. ~Jude

Thanks for that info

Its very easy to do this
OK I will lay out the steps for you

Go to pages > click add new

With your new page call it my blog or anything you want to call it
Do not write any content on this page
Publish the blank page

Go to menu and add the page to your menu click save changes
This page will now appear on your menu with the title you gave it

Next step

Go to settings, then reading, there you will see a box called POSTS PAGE
Select the page you have just published from the drop down menu and then save changes, to do this you must have a static home page.

Once you have done this then you can go to posts and add new

When you publish a post it will automatically go to you blog page and this page will now be called a custom page in your menu

Every time you publish a post the post will go into the blog roll with the latest post at the top
That's it, you now have a blog roll

If you want me to explain how you can custom order your posts in any order you want, let me know and I will give you the steps and the plugin you need in another post on this thread

Barry

Thanks so much Barry for taking the time to write out the steps I think I can follow your steps I will wait till its quite here right now the kids are running amok lol

What a wonderfully simplified explanation. Thanks for a job well done.

I saw how to do that, but what if you have two blogs.....looked like you could only add one under reading. My home page is set as static.

I need a static page how is that done

You said I should have a static page how is that done

This will show you how

Barry

Sorry Alian, wish I could help you. Not enough knowledge yet. Plus exhaustion factor.
Hope someone can answer.
To your success!

I got a few good replies so I will give it a try tommorow

Cannot help you Alan. So sorry.

Thats ok next time!

I have noticed a couple ways to do this, but the one wouldn't work for me since I have two separate blog pages.

Its still confusing to me...

Yes, I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

:)

This article is really helpful and describes how to do it.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/blogroll/add-a-blogroll-link/

Apparently you can do it from right within Wordpress. You take the steps in the guide to create a link module and then put it up on your page using the links widget. Good luck! Hope this helps!

Thanks I will check it out

Hi Alan,

To add a blog roll to your site you would click on the "Links" on the left hand side while in the dashboard. Add your links and then add a "Links" widget where ever you would like to display the blog roll. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any issues.

-Levi

Levi, where is "links"? I don't see it down the left-hand side of my dashboard and I clicked on everything. The only place I know where links are is in Menus. Is that what your'e talking about?

Hi Carla,

In the most recent versions of WordPress this was removed, and is only available if you had it before the update. You can try this:

http://codex.wordpress.org/Links_Manager

Keep in mind that plugin hasn't been updated in awhile, so there is the possibility it will not work. That being said, it seems to work.

You could also build a custom menu to accomplish the same thing.

If you have any more questions, let me know.

-Levi

No wonder I couldn't find it! LOL Thanks, Levi. I know how to build a menu so might try that. I'll yell out if I get stuck.

Good luck!

Thanks I just can;t find the link button

See my replies to CarlaIves.

See Levi's response to me above, Alan. It's not there unless you had it before. One of WP's little mysteries. ;)

Great.....oh well!

Is anyone getting email notices from WA?

Mine stopped yesterday in my Outlook mail account. I switched to Gmail and they started up again. You're the 4th person who's having problems, Alan, that I've read of. Not sure what's going on as many have no problem with it.

Thanks....

Yes mine is coming in fine Alan

I can't seem to be able to figure out how to remove the header links I want them in the side wigets help!

Alan, are you good with this now, or do you need more help. ~Jude

I would still like to get rid of some of the top links and keep the side bar but can't seem to figure it out!

After I wrote the steps below I remembered that Leo has done a tutorial. It's always worth checking Leo's trainings as he has lots of excellent ones.

He has this one included in his series called dashboard-tutorial-menu, so it doesn't come in in WA search if you are searching for Custom Menu

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/wordpress-dashboard-tutorial-menu

And/or follow the steps below:

1. Appearances > Menus
2. Click on 'Create A New Menu'
3. Name the menu - e.g. "Sidebar Menu"
4. In Sidebar Menu, select from the left-side list the items to appear
5. Click on Add To Menu.

You should now see them on the right side. Drag each item to the desired order.

6. SAVE your new custom menu.

Next, go to Appearances > Widgets

1. Drag the Custom Menu widget to the location where you want
your menu to appear in the sidebar.

2. Open it. Select the menu to appear in the widget: Sidebar Menu

3. Save the custom menu.

Visit your site, refresh the page and check to see the new custom menu in your sidebar.

Then go back to Appearances >Menus > Top Menu (or whatever you named that one). Click on the drop down arrow for each item. You will see a Remove link in the bottom of the window.

After you have removed the items you no longer want to show in the top navigation, SAVE the revised menu.

Visit your webpage, refresh the page, and you should see the revised top menu and the newly created sidebar menu. ~Jude

Thanks for taking the time to write all those steps down for me I appreciate it

Hey Alan, You need to go to edit page ( Not quick edit ) scroll down on the right to "Exclude pages" uncheck the box at "include this page in list of pages"
Then you can go to appearance, menues and add that page to the sidebar menu.

Thanks for that info.

Alan, are those pages up top? How did you get them in there originally?

It was just the titles of the pages....when I take them out they get replaced with a number

Your theme is Pyrmont V2. I tried looking up some instructions for you but can't find any applicable. The one thing I did find is that it said the theme hadn't been updated in 2 years and may no longer be supported. Hope that is wrong. We must have some WP gurus here who can help!

Thanks I might have to switch I just wanted one with a black background the paintings show so much better

Sorry, I'm not certain of what you are asking. If you're talking about the text in your header being linked, that's common and why would you want to remove it?

You can always go to your admin page, click on Customize under Appearance, and under Title, un-check the show header text but again, why would you want to do this?

I only want the side links....

Understood my friend. Then what I said will work.

Thanks!
