Content is the lifeblood of your business. For this reason you must continually publish on your website.

But we all know that coming up with content regularly all alone, isn’t obvious at all. And if you don’t have the budget, buying content is out of the question.

What’s the Solution?

Do you know that Google counts comments on your blog posts as content? This is why Kyle said in the month 2 SAC tutorial that a 2,000-word blog post he writes ends up with something like 40,000 words, all because of comments.

A blogger also said that since he started getting comments on his site he doesn’t worry much anymore about writing content. Yet Google continues to rank his site higher and higher and gives him more and more traffic. Both because those comments counted as content.

Google loves to see new content on your website. People’s comments and your replies count as such.

So if you’re wondering how to have content on your blog each day, the secret is to offer comments on other people’s blogs here at Wealthy Affiliate.

We’re fortunate to have such an amazing opportunity here. For, as you offer comments on other members’ blogs, they will reciprocate. The more detailed your comments (I aim for a minimum of 200 words), the same they will usually write too.

So, if you offered 200 and the person did the same, you end up with a 400-word content. Should you comment on 3 blogs a day, you would be ending up with 1,000-1,200 words a day!

That would make Almighty Google happy and they wouldn’t hesitate to show you some love in the form of sending good traffic your way.

Where Are The Best Places To Get Blogs To Comment On?

They are within the training materials.

Many newbies are eager to know if they’re doing the right thing. So they drop links into the comments section of the training materials.

Kyle also encourages those doing the SAC to drop their URLs into the training material comments section. So guys, those are the places you can get posts to comment on.

The best comments are also detailed and sincere. Not: “what a nice article!”, “I agree with your idea”, “Thanks for sharing” or that sort of “lazy commenting” thing.

Take your time to read the piece and pour your heart out. Others will do the same and your site will be receiving content every day.

As comments furnish you with content, there will be no more pressure on you to write your own constantly. So you can take your time to write your own content without falling foul of Google.

Your Turn Now

Thanks Akoli, it's a good reminder not to forget about the comments.

Nick

Yes, Nick, comments have their usefulness too.

Thanks for the information Akoli.

Derek

Always glad to help, Derek.

Thanks for chiming in.

I am a sit on the fence in regards to the effect of comments. It is far from set in stone that comments on your site are good for SEO purposes.

An effect it has for sure, but a "must have" not always the case.

I see a lot of sites that have the comments facility switched off yet rank well and dominate their niches.

I also see sites with a lot of comments that don't do so well ranking wise.

Of course, the opposite is also true -. Comments are only 1 of 200+ factors.

As far as comments for content goes. When was the last time you searched for something and ended up being directed by the search engine to the comments section in an article?

Never? seldom? very seldom?

That's my point!.

It's content but in my opinion not of great value SEO wise.

But, turn it on its head and leave comments....

Booyah!

You can indeed end up getting traffic from them. Particularly when you leave quality, helpful and insightful comments and have that link back to your site - (not in the actual comment but in the appropriate area/box).

In effect, you are putting yourself, and your brand (comment under YOUR name not your site, looks more authentic that way!) in front of your target audience when you are commenting on similar sites in your area.

Also, it is very effective for outreach and getting guest post slots, building your network and so on.

Yes, it does have a small but helpful effect on SEO, this has been documented by both Neil Patel and Brian Dean and many others in the SEO industry.

I have found that being active in your community and commenting on blogs generates traffic, good long term traffic. I've gotten traffic from comments I left, forgotten about and got traffic over a year later! (I remembered the site due to the rather unique and brilliant site name!).

Hi Derek, there are so many factors contributing to SEO that one can't pick out a single factor and say "this is it." Maybe, except content.

If you take a close look, those sites that have the comments facility switched off have received so many comments. Some of them also don't want to be bothered by comments anymore. These are sites alreadydominating their niches.

If a site is receiving a lot of comments and don't do so well ranking wise, the reason could be elsewhere, but not because of the comments.

As you rightly noted, comments are only 1 of 200+ factors for ranking.

When you do searching for something you'll never end up being directed by the search engine to the comments section in an article neither will you be directed to the middle or the conclusion (which are properly parts of the article) because the URL sends you straight to the article and the part of the article you go to are the title and the introduction.

We're advised to trash comments which are spam and even you can correct grammar, spelling, form, etc of a content before publishing it. That'swhat we learnt in SAC month 3; This is to make it give you value as bad comments can make Google downgrade your post's rank.

When you comment on a site or page or post here, of course it is done under your name. But for the sake of reciprocity, you must leave your URL for other people to comment on your content too. That's when the juice comes in.

I'm glad that in the conclusion you said "Yes, it does have a small but helpful effect on SEO, this has been documented by both Neil Patel and Brian Dean and many others in the SEO industry."

That's all my piece is about. And thanks for your valuable comment.

Thanks you kindly for your reply,

I think you misunderstand what I am trying to say in regards to comments as content.

"When you do searching for something you'll never end up being directed by the search engine to the comments section in an article neither will you be directed to the middle or the conclusion (which are properly parts of the article) because the URL sends you straight to the article and the part of the article you go to are the title and the introduction."

I distinctly recall searching for something a good while back, maybe a year or 2 and just the once being specifically to something that was written as a comment.

That is what I am referring to. very seldom you will find that the comments on their own right attract search engine based traffic.

Sure the main content can, by a long shot will, regardless top, middle or bottom.

For what it is worth, comments, which are considered as user-generated content in googles quality raters handbook does have some value SEO wise.

But it still remains that very few people end up on a site directly from search engines due to their search term directly relating to what was written as a comment.

I do agree the value lies elsewhere though.

I've never heard anyone ending up on a post's comment through search. We're learning every day.

Comments are like the dessert. It's not the meal but important all the same.

Just as you can do without the dessert, you can also forgo comments and still rank.

Hi Akoli,

Thank you! This is great information that you have shared with us. Highly appreciated! Much success to you!

Kind regards,
Nichola

Hi Nichola,

I'm always happy to give back to the community. And if I made somebody glad that way, then I've enriched my life.

Enjoy your day.

Awesome! Thank you!

Thank you Akoli. I didn't know this and will certainly try and leave comments going forwards. I guess this is all about finding the right balance and focus, as ultimately its all about writing something whether comments or posts. i would be interested to know if Google ranks comments content higher than actual post content or the other way around. I'm guessing that the fact that you have comments shows your site is of interest and is active so it ought to rank higher just for that.

Thanks
Emma

Thank you Emma too for reacting to this piece. I'm proud to be giving back to this community. Comments will be easier to write than or posts. This doesn't mean comments should take precedence over posts. What I think is that Google ranks content higher because of comments. You're right: the fact that you have comments shows your site is of interest and is active so it ought to rank higher just for that.
