Second goal: Buy equipment to improve productivity

This blog continues the one I wrote on Friday titled First Goal: Quit my 16-year-old part-time day job.

In the mail I sent my friend in 2015, my second goal read:

“Right now I’m using a 2006 HP 530 Notebook PC I bought secondhand 8 years ago.

The battery lasted only a year and I’ve been using it since directly connected to the mains. My RECOVERY (D:) has only 909 Mo free space now over 7.80 Go while I need more space for files, videos, eBooks, and images. This, and the lack of other equipment, is affecting my efficiency.

I therefore need $5,000 to buy:

I know how long my computer sometimes takes to execute simple tasks like saving a file. I know I can save hours by investing in a new computer as well as work well when I have other equipment.

Another example: while doing research the other day for an article, one site refused me access because I was using Windows 7 and another because my firefox browser is outdated. I have some times fallen victim to hackers since my outdated computer systems hardly protect me.

As for the internet, sometimes the cybercafé where I work from is full and I have to wait my turn. This leads to a waste of time. Following courses, etc. from that noisy environment is a herculean task. Worse, I miss several important webinars when their time falls outside the café’s opening hours. I’ve simply stopped using skype there because of the noise and the intrusion of other people.”

What has changed in 2019?

It is almost the same story, as if time has remain almost still.

Right now I’m using a 2011 hp ProBook 6360b PC I bought secondhand 2 years ago.

The battery lasted only 3 months and I’ve been using it since directly connected to the mains. My RECOVERY (D:) has 217 Go free space now over 254 Go, leaving enough space for storing files, videos, eBooks, and images. So, my efficiency is no longer affected. So I’m not in a hurry to change it.

I have bought a digital camera, an iPhone, and headphone but not yet a video camera. I have put on hold https://smartblogger.com/blogging-tools/

I haven’t yet got High Speed Internet connection at home so still work from a cybercafé, although the cost of the installation has dropped a lot. But the monthly subscription remains still high.

I have no complaints to make about my computer although it’s still running on Windows 7. Last two weeks, a site I visited refused me entry, asking me to update my Windows 7 to at least 10.

There are many cybercafés now so one no longer has to wait to find a place to work. But the noise is still there because in West Africa, we are a “talking people.” But with my headphone always on to listen to jazz music or follow other matters on YouTube, the noise doesn’t bother me much. Of course, I miss webinars when their time falls outside the café’s opening hours which is 8.30 am to 10 pm. Skype is still on standby.
