Focus Equals Faith

“You can't depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.” -- Mark Twain

Have you ever watched racing or taken a professional driving course? One of the first things they tell you is, in the event of a loss of control, focus your eyes on where you want to go, not on what you’re trying to avoid hitting. For example, if you start to spin, focus down the track; do not look at the wall.

If you have read my last few posts, you are aware of the current situation I am in. Moving cross country, forced to find a job, and so on. And I have a confession to make…

As positive a person as I am, I had a moment of weakness. I was exhausted from all of the packing and planning, and while lying in bed with one foot in dreamland, I had an anxiety attack.

What have I done? I quit a $70,000 job just to move my family 3000 miles to be homeless. Am I nuts? My wife is going to leave me. Argh!!!!

After hyperventilating for a few minutes, I began to meditate. Instead of focusing on everything that could go wrong, I began focusing on everything that was right. Instead of depending on what my brain was telling me was real, I began imagining what my faith knows is real.

And here is the reality… It doesn’t matter.

My brain says that I gave up a “great” job. My faith tells me I found Wealthy Affiliate.

My brain says that I gave up my 401(k). My faith tells me I started my own business.

My brain says that I gave up taking care of my wife. My faith tells me I am taking care of her and future generations.

In other words, my brain says that I gave up security. My faith tells me I found freedom.

I realized that I’m no longer looking for a “career”. I don’t care if I get a $50,000 executive manager job, because that is not my focus. I don’t need a title or a corner office. I would be just as happy bagging groceries at the local Wal-Mart.

Why?

Because all that career stuff is just ego. All I really need is enough to put a roof over our heads and a bit of food in our bellies. The fancy job with the fancy title is not the focus… my business is.

After realizing that enough would be enough, the stress and anxiety just melted away. I just need something that will give me a few hours a day – enough to convince a landlord that I can pay the rent – and then I can focus on what I do best: create content for my site.

So, if you find yourself losing faith in yourself and your business, remember the racing lesson. Focus equals faith. Focus on what you want, not what you’re afraid of, and I promise you will achieve your dreams.

You need to believe in yourself and your own judgement, which you clearly do AJ, Alan.

Thank you.

Rather than giving you a big long explanation with my own examples can I just say that I think you've got it absolutely 100% right. You are making the scales of the work/life balance weighted in your favour. That should put a smile on your face everytime.
As for the brain, well, it's doing what it's hard-wired to do. Protect the gene.
You tighten your belt, decide what's actually important and enjoy life.
Good for you.

Thanks :-)

Excellent, I know exactly what you mean!
I was once told to, “Never pay attention to how things look, with your feelings of emotions, how things seems with certain circumstances, but to stay in faith!”
Thank you for the inspiration,
David.

Thank you :-)

Remember entrepreneurs are a weird bunch but at least here at WA we are normal LOL

Thanks. And I totally agree. That's why I LOVE WA so much. We all have good days and not so good. When we're feeling bad, we need the community. When we're feeling good, the community needs us :-)

Very good advice. You are a great example for us all. Yes, we WILL succeed! Just give us the time we need...

Thanks. Just focus on the positive :-)

Great blog. Focus on what your goal is.
Now, to more practical stuff. Maybe you've already checked this out but have you looked into less conventional places for accommodations? I mean postings on Craigslist, bulletin boards at local coffee houses, college bulletin boards, individuals looking to rent places as opposed to real estate agents and the usual professional people who rent places and have the stiff requirements.
Just a thought.

Mike

We have thought about it, but as we are not quite there yet we haven't had a chance to check "local" resources (e.g. billboards, etc.). We've got a pretty good plan though. We'll be okay. :-)

The part you talked about spinning started my vertigo and nausea set in. I suffer from that you stated “focus down track not on the wall.” The whole room spins. I took a whiff of lavender oil finally calmed my nerves and vertigo down. Whew. Glad you settled down with your thoughts. I know what it is like having those little moments of anxiety. Of course, I take medicine to keep the vertigo and nausea at bay along with lavender oil, it helps with sense of calmness. Hope everything works out for you.

Thanks. And it will... I have faith :-)

Very well put. Your focus is in the right place! You will do this! You've got this. The racing analogy is spot on, although I don't watch it. Keeping focused has got to be the number one thing or close to it for entrepreneurs. There are so many things to distract you from your goal, but you must keep pushing if you want to make it! Keep me posted!

Thanks. Yes, the mind (and ego) are clever little fellows that must be watched at all times :-)
