I have been curious about the above and would like some insight on it. Any direction or guidance would be appreciated.

Finally, got some clarity on this alt photo thing. Tried several times, nothing made sense. Thx. MarionBlack

Good question Adrian, I learned a lot also. Thanks:)

Awesome Jazmin! Glad I could be of help!

Image alt tags are very important. If your image doesn't render in a browser then the alt text takes it's place. In addition, the visually impaired (or brain dead like me) can have their device read the text of the image.

In addition, the alt text is important for SEO. Your keyword for that page goes there so search engines can give you brownie points for being such an astute webmaster. It helps with rank.

Ok, I'm off. I gotta go play with Windows 10 some more.

Hmm, sounds like I can't be ignorant about this any further. Thanks for the vaulable input on it!

Very nicely said, I didn't know this about the alt text.
On another note, I am downloading Windows 10... looking forward to it!

Been messing with Windows 10 for the last 2 days and I like it. I will post my comments in a new blog post, "Windows 10, I got it."

The ranking is important but the best bit is the help it gives to the vision impaired as Marion says.

O.o I have to really consider and look at all the photos I have then.

Good question.
I too have a better understanding of it now.
Thanks for asking it, and thanks to those who gave the answers.
-Theuns

True that! You're welcome Theuns!

My understanding is that if the picture fails to load then this alt will display in its place. Alt= alternative

Ah that makes sense.

They let search engines know what the images are, AND hence, they help to improve your post/page SEO ranking. It is therefore also good to use the post/page's focus keyword in the image's alt tag.

Ah, that's great to hear. I'm learning more on how useful these alt-tags can be. Hmm I'm going to need to do a major overhaul on my pics then as I do not have any alt-tags >.

It wasn't until I started using Yoast SEO check that I found out about them and their importance. The SEO check would tell me I did not have alt tags associated with any images in the post, and would discredit my SEO ranking until I included at least one.

Some people who are vision impaired have their computer read aloud to them and the software reads the alt tag so the viewer knows what the image represents if they can't see it clearly. Use your keyword for the alt tag for the first image for SEO but be descriptive with the rest of the images. ~Marion

Hmm is the first image different from the featured image or could the feature image also be the first image of the post?

The featured image is the image which appears on your blog roll. You can choose to have it as the first image or not. I usually have the featured image and the first image the same.

Well, search engines can't read images so the alt tag tells them what the images are about and if they provide relevance to your post this could lead to a higher ranking.

Images also rank separately so they can be found in the image search if someone types the keyword attached to the alt tag of the image.

It's essentially a way to use the keyword another way in the post. If you have the same image with the same tag this could count as keyword stuffing.

So the short answer lol is that they tell the search engines what the image is.

Awesome! Thanks for all that data!

I would like to know if there is a plugin that could scan comments and pages/posts to look for duplicate content.

Any one know of any that can perform this function?

Hey Adrian did you find a plugin that helped you pinpoint duplicate content? I'm interested in something like this as well.

Just saw this blog. May be of use?? On the duplicate content discussion, true, Google don't "penalize" you for duplicate content. Just so long as you don't consider not ranking your site as penalizing!! They will look to see which site contains the original info. That site will rank - the one with duplicate content on will not. I consider that as penalizing!! What Google means by "not penalizing" is that no further action will be taken!! Using duplicate content is not worth it...not to mention, just rude!!!

I hear that Sarah! Thanks for your input!

Duplicate content is only a problem on your own site ie having a post and page identical

Ah, I can see how that can be.

There are sites where you can do this, just put url and you have it. But duplicate content is not an issue, Google does not punish you for this. Leo had a blog about it.

Jovo,
I'm a bit confused. I thought that duplicate content was a big no-no.
Guess I was wrong.
-Theuns

I can't find Leo's blog about this, but here is Matt Cutts explaining how Google handles duplicate content. http://bit.ly/1Mpx0vh

I tried to find the link and it appears that Leo has removed the blog. No idea why. I have it bookmarked. But his message was the same as you see in Cutts' video which Kathy provided. There is no punishment for this.

it is a big no no, thats why all these guys that sell their content spinner software always brag about being able to pass copy scape. Google copyscape

I wanted to know for myself specifically if someone was posting duplicate comments on my site and on other sites. That's my main reason behind this question.

Although, I'm not taking any chances with duplicate content in general.

hey buddy , that might be spam too

Then use copyscape.com its about 10 cents each time you use it

not a plugin but grammerly has that function

I see. Thanks for the reply.

Interesting question! Apparently there is a plugin called "Find Duplicates" (see https://wordpress.org/plugins/find-duplicates/). Take a look at it.

Nice! I'll take a look at that!

Be sure to test the plugin before you use it on your site!

Thanks for the tip.

I want to know if anyone here knows of any good plugins to use for translations. I'm not particularly running into to many people from other countries but I figure it would be goo

Seems to be a hot topic at the moment Adrian and as I posted yesterday, language difficulties should not be a barrier to anybody who wants to come here and build a better future for themselves and their loved ones.
Good post Adrian
Mark

True enough Mark. I would just want my site to be foreign language-friendly is all :)

A worthy ambition Adrian.

Appreciated Mark!

I use Transposh and love it

Thanks for your reply!

Google Translate...

There's a Google Translator plugin? Didn't know that.

Oh, yes! It's a more popular one. It's the one with the pretty Google icon. When you click the icon, a Google Translate header appears with a drop-down to select language.

Oh, that's a pretty one! You're welcome!

Nice! With your suggestion, I was able to find a good one called Google Website Translator by Prisna.

Thanks for your help!

I just took a look at my ranking and saw that there were two of each person on there for EVERY person listed. Is this visible for anyone else too? Is this a glitch of some sort?

Hey maybe now that there are two of me I can get more things done. LOL

Haha That would be awesome!

If you didnot tell me I would have thought I drank to much yesterday:)

I hear you Loes!

Yeah.... It told me twice that my member rank has worsened in the last few days. LoL

Aww haha that sucks Theuns.

Lol. I just checked, It is definitely a glitch. ;))

Thanks Jewel! I freaked out for a sec haha

Lol. You freaked out but you still maintain yr "coolness"... :))

Heh Appreciated Jewel!

Yeah, just a glitch, I am sure they are reading this right now, if not soon and will tend to it shortly.

I agree! Ty for the reply.

It looks like a glitch to me too. ~Marion

Thanks for checking Marion

It's there for me too, just checked!

I see I'm not the only one.

Haha does that mean you are back in the top 100 and not the top 50, then?!?!? ;-0

Lol my rank says 42 but you're right the indicator of "Top 50" is missing too.

Oh yeah, so there is. I will report that to Carson.

Awesome! I'm sure they will be receiving that from others as well.

Yup I have it too!! I expect it's a glitch as not usual!

Ah good to know.

I want to know how to do the above as I have just plain text but I think it would look awesome with an image behind it to sum up the mood of the post.

Adrian

Adrian, maybe I miss understood you. If you want an individual image for the background of a unique post, Loes has the method to use. I was thinking you wanted the same image for the background on all posts. This is where the theme, like "Make", itself may have a feature that allows customization of the background color or image.

Sorry if I miss understood. .

Ah, I totally understand Larry! Thank you for the clarification and I appreciate your input regardless. I was actually thinking about putting a useful background image in the near future :)

Thanks for asking this, and a special thanks to Loes (Once again !! ) for coming to the rescue.
-Theuns

You're welcome Theuns! I hate being stuck so I always ask when I feel that way about something! :)

When you use your theme option, it allmost allways appear on all posts, When I want text over an image I write the text ON the images, and publish it that way, you can do that in pixlr express,
You can follow these instructions: You only have to change the measures.
Then you can choose in effect - use the slider "amount"
and type your text on it.

Sheesh Loes, I'm going to have to build an external memory, specifically to store all the great teachings we get from you,Sigh...
Luckily I have an old hard drive in my parts box ;))

:))

Thanks Loes!!! I'm loving Pixlr!! It's a cool program! Made my first text over image post last night :)

Maybe I don't understand the text over image thing correctly.
Is this saved then as an image?
So the whole post is an image?

This way google will not be able to send its little spiders over the text to rank the article, right?
Not sure why someone would do this.

For a header or an image it is a nice thing to add some text, but the whole post?
I don't think so.

Hmm those are good questions. Now, I'm curious to know the answers to the above!

That's right, I used it on my disclosure(no-index), and I use it for quotes(to avoid duplicate content)

Hmm. So it won't work for actual content then... :/

You can use it this way for parts of your content, interesting thing to work out, though

Hmm, that certainly is interesting. Man, I got all excited and now I have to do a bit more work to this.

Loes, does Google see this type of text on images? Also is there any chance of making the code in the make 'suitable image' bigger as I can't read it here. I experimented but couldn't find anything that looked like yours.

If the text is part of the image file then google can't see the text.

I know that happens with media I upload normally. I was just wondering if a background, or watermark as we call it, worked the same.

Yes. That would be the same.
Only if the text is in the actual source code can it be read by google.

Well when you have a watermark on a page you enter your text on that page by typing it on the page over the watermark. It isn't contained in the watermark image.

when you use the div code, your text stays visuable for Google, I used a picture from over 2500px.
When you want a picture from my selection on freeimages, just PM me your mail address and if it's possible (I have also got picture for a present, they are about 300px) then I will send you the full sized by mail

I haven't used a watermark.
Do you use a plugin for that?
I depends on how the watermark+text is implemented on the site in the end.
I can have a look at the source code if you give me the url of a page with a watermark.

Ah, Loes answer cleared it up for me.
You are creating a div, write your text in it and then set a backround for this div via css?
That would be visible for google, like Loes said.

Yes you can use a div code, and place it in your texteditor for a background image

Hi Adrian, Usually adding images to the background is a Theme feature. I just changed my theme to "Make". It is very flexible with respect to customizing backgrounds, including using different colors and images.

Ah, that's awesome Larry! I like how you mention it's incorporated with the theme. I don't think I have that with mine but I'll certainly keep "Make" in mind.

Hey Larry
Could you expand on your explanation, or even write a post on this?
It's something that's been on my mind for awhile
Thanks
J.
If you do right a post, let me know ok, it's easy to miss posts here.

There is an A4 slot in the top of your laptop just push the pic in there !!

Huh? I'm not following you Lindon? What do you mean?

It's bad Australian humor. I know there isn't, but imagine a feed slot right across the top of your laptop. You feed the document in there and it becomes your background. Really bad sense of humor. My apologies.

Oh A4 size paper! I get it now! The standard paper measurement in the US is 8.5" x 11" so I didn't know what you meant by A4 haha

Thanks for clarifying though. And yes, that would be exciting to have at the top of the laptop. Or a horizontal slot across the side of the monitor and scan that way lol

That reminds me - aren't there scanners that are about 2 inches thick and 12 inches long and 1 inch wide that are used as handheld scanners these days?

I thought you said scammers and there are some that are really thick and do something with their hand. !!

o.O I understand Lindon! Haha.

Do you have the option to add custom css to your post? I mean is there a field for custom css?
If so try this:

background-image: url("url of your picture.jpeg");

It has to be exactly as I wrote there. You need the " " in which you post the url of the image together with the ending like jpeg, png,
After the brackets has to be the semicolon.

If you don't have this kind of field in your theme, then it gets too complicated if you don't have experience with HTML and coding.
Then I would recommend to do what the others said and look for a theme that offers background images for your posts.

Hmm not too sure about that. I'll look into other options but thank you for sharing! :)

Depending on your Theme, it might have to include coding. If it were me, I would change Themes. I am assuming you mean the image appears BEHIND the content...

Yes. I actually found a different way by using a photo editor but good to know on the coding.

The problem with using html code to change the background is that when the Theme is upgraded, there is a very good chance that you will loose your background image.

Hmm.. Is that because it wipes the edits from before the update?

I'm sure an HTML code guru like Loes would have a way to permanently customize the background and not loose the code during an up grade. But being the novice that I am, all I can say is that the Background is part of the basic Theme software. If you modify it, that modification is an add-on. When the Theme developers decide to update the theme, they know nothing about how you modified the code. So the new version code just writes over the old version and your modification disappears. Like I said, an HTML code expert may have a way to modify the content area and be able to salvage the modification in the case of an update to the theme.

o.O interesting. I'm still pretty new to all this but I learn fast. Thank you for the data Larry! That definitely clears things up.

Like I said, an HTML code expert may have a way to modify the content area and be able to salvage the modification in the case of an update to the theme.

o.O interesting. I'm still pretty new to all this but I learn fast. Thank you for the data Larry! That definitely clears things up.
