Common Sense

So, like all humans you have an in-built need to communicate.

Unlike others, yours it just that little bit stronger. Probably because tou have a story, or a message to get out there.

You start to look at the options. Probably you have been through Twitter, FB, and a whole raft of other social sites, but somehow found them too restrictive and claustraphobic. You have probably even dabbled with the Tube, but found that being infront of a camera isn't really where your skill set lies. And then at some point you thought that you would have a go at writing. I mean how difficult can it be, right?

As we all know now wrong. You probably had several goes at Wordpress, or some similar medium to get your message out but, you probably failed a few times. Yet the need was still there, so you draw in breath and give it another go, but this time you are a little bit wiser and join some kind of Blogging community and draw on both the support and experience of otheres. You slowly get out your first few posts, that start to gain some small audience, then all of a sudden you begin to find your confidence and the process of writing becomes much easier.

Your juices start to flow and so getting posts out becomes an easily accessible release for you. Your audiance is slowly growing. I know it's about time to see if your idea, your efforts could be monetised right?

I have been here for a few months now and yes I have been through all of these steps. So although I knew that the Google get out of jail sollution Adsense, meant that you relinquished a large proportion of your control over your blog. It did offer convenience, and so I signed up and started to experiment with it. Placements, concentration and such.

All the time continuing to produce new fresh content. On the whole I was pretty pleased with how things were going. It was, and is still obvious that my learning curve is still quite steep and I continue to make mistakes, and there are still many little things about my site that I am still trying to put right.

I am from a background that values feedback, positive or otherwise. Having said that the vast majority of the coments that I have been receiving is very encouraging and positive. However one person made some comments that stopped me in my tracks a little and made me eventually go back and take another look at one of my shorter posts.

It was one of my shorter more consise posts and the content in there is somethinng that I remain very proud of, it delivers it's message very well. At this point it is important to realise that Google, uses it's algerythms in a way that identifies growing trends (it is these very algerythms are what we rely so heavily on) and therefore Google can spot very easily where to place it's most stricking ads. And so as you start to grow, you will attract more and more vigorous advertising. Bcause my site was growning healthily and this post had attracted a lot of attention Google Adsense, had gone to work in a massive way and to be honest this once great post had lost it's message and to somebody looking for insight and comment, had become 1 huge spam attack.

I was so dissapointed, I had (and continue to) worked so very hard to do my research, and had put my best efforts to getting an important message across as well as I could, and Google had basically plastered a billboard straight across the top of it and not even taken the time to advertise anything even remotely connected to my message, indeed some of the items they were advertising were things that I would not even wish any connection. I felt like the YouTuber that had poured my heart out on something important, who had then spent hours editing their footage, trimming and enhancing a message, and then had a music video plastered across it by some random third-party.

From that second forth,Adsense, for me was doomed, tried, tested and found irreversably guilty..........................off with its head!!!

The convenience of Adsense may be a reasonable compromise for some, deffinately not for me I am affraid. The only advise that I can offer from my experience is that if you don't have the time to search out affiliate connections, or you are not really all that interested in making any money, but the pennies that Adsense will generate then it really is about the best resource for you. Other than thatplease steer clear. Take the time to source products that you can connect with, that you would actually like to be associated with you and your site. That way not only do you enhance your reputation, but you may build up a relationship with your advertisers.

By advertising complimentary products you will not only enhance your site, but you will also do a better job of selling your advertiser's products.

I've got 2 sites, one where AdSense is in use and the other where it's not in use at all. AdSense is how I earned my first ever revenue, but it overall, it isn't much in grand scheme of things. I much prefer earning revenue from promoting products.

Hi, Adrian.

I’m glad to find someone with the same view on Adsense as myself. When I visit websites for whatever reason I become irked by those that deliver a constant barrage of banners trying to sell me something I would never want. It is particularly annoying on the iPhone where it makes it very difficult to read the content that I visited the site for in the first place. For that reason I intend to keep my website banner and pop up free.

Best wishes,

Steve.

Glad to read your take on Adsense. Fortunately, I avoided it. In fact, still have no advertising on my site. Good on you to share your experience.

Positive Vibrations...

Hi Adrian,
Thanks for sharing. This makes me think twice about Adsense. I had tried signing up with Adsense and got denied.

The home page of my blog theme is not a static page and at the time I didn’t have a lot of content on my site so I was frustrated but then I’ve been on other sites and I get totally annoyed with the ads. I feel like they disrupt what I’m reading and their not relevant to the post.

Your post just helped me realized what I was already feeling. I don’t need Adsense on my site and to concentrate on marketing my affiliate products.

Thanks,
Renee :)

Hi Adrian thank you for the heads up

Murray

Hi Adrian, Pleased to read your comments on the vagaries of Adsense, I am sure that your guilty sentence was well founded, and will save many a budding entrepreneur falling into the same trap, many thanks for letting us know.

Adsense is the first affiliate program that approved my site. No other affiliate programs as of the moment.

I think that research and persistence is the key, you also learn how to turn rejection around by how you respond to them.

Yes, Adrian, I don't want to fix my eyes on the hopeless case, it sucks me of my efforts, time and resources.
