Greetings everyone! is there that much of a difference between a .com vs .org domain when I am start
Greetings everyone! Is there that much of a difference between a .com vs .org domain when I am starting a niche site not edu, non profit. The domain I want is much better .or
.org was originally meant for organizations (Red Cross etc.) but usually because people are so accustomed to .coms, even though you have a .org, people will type .com first. That is why you should always try to get the .com.
I remember, as popular as Wikipedia is, I used to always type http://Wikipedia.com into the address bar but it's actually a .org site. This is just one of the downsides of using a .org for your domain.
Luckily Wikipedia owns both the .org and the .com so they don't have to deal with this problem. The .com just redirects to their site anyways but if you're using a .org that already has a .com registered then you're just doing the owner of the .com a favor by building a site that might eventually get popular.
In retrospect, it may be a good idea to buy both the .com and the .org as Jay & Mel both pointed out this common confusion folks seem to have.
Just be sure to try and rank with the .com 1st.
Gary
.com is preferable because it indicates that you are a business. In the early days of the web, .org was reserved for non-profit entities. 'Old-timers' may still carry that perception. Not only that, most people automatically add '.com' to a domain name, so you might wind up accidentally sending people to a competitor if you verbally tell them your URL.
Steven,
It all depends on the type of domain you are working with. Generally, if you are doing a commercial website and attempting to make money you will want to use a .com to get ranked well with Google within your niche.
If your site is more geared to a specific group of people like fireman or real estate folks you may find a .org helps you better.
In order to give you the best information, I found this,
"The .org extension is a very good choice for charity or non-profit sites, this is its most common use."
With a however of,
"If used correctly the .org can give you a bump in social credence or validation, as internet users could see a .org as a more benevolent site."
You can read the whole piece here;

I hope this helps, my best,
Gary
You are Welcome, Steve.
It is like Mel says below regarding peoples confusion and always thinking .com.
Unless you have something very unique I would stick with making your .org work as a .com somehow.

Apologize for being so technologically impaired! How and what information do I give to a friend who is helping me to move an existing site to the great service at WA?
OK, if the site is not a Wordpress site, it will need to be completely redesigned and built upon the Wordpress platform. Once you have created your initial site, you may give your friend a username on your Wordpress site for them to assist. It is not recommended to give them ftp access to your account, but those details are available to you once you have created the initial website in Wordpress.
Thanks so much for your answer but I think I need to explain better/clarify. It is a wordpress site but the site is down on cancelled Hostgator Hosting. The way I understand it is since he built it he has the files I just need the information I need to send him so he can set it up on WA Hosting! Any help is GREATLY appreciated
You MUST initially create the site using the tool to build a Wordpress site, then you can give him a username with administrator rights, and he can then restore the files from your previous site to your newly built site. He cannot start from scratch here, it needs to at least go through the 'build a website' piece on WA first.
