How is it to work with this issue?

I am using the Di Business Theme because I see it looks good.

I was about to place some ads from Google AdSense but this is what it says whenever I am going to place the codes in the Theme Header.

Heads up!

You appear to be making direct edits to your theme in the WordPress dashboard. We recommend that you don’t! Editing your theme directly could break your site and your changes may be lost in future updates. If you need to tweak more than your theme’s CSS, you might want to try making a child theme.

If you decide to go ahead with direct edits anyway, use a file manager to create a copy with a new name and hang on to the original. That way, you can re-enable a functional version if something goes wrong.

I don't know if I am using a Parent Theme but when I installed it there was nothing said or a reminder.

It's somewhat complicated to follow what it suggests by making a child theme. Likewise with the second suggestion using a file manager to create a copy with a new name.

These are all technical needing enough knowledge or skill to do it.

Any one of you classmates could teach me to get with this issue since it says by doing the edit could break my site?

I created a training about it with the new WordPress update do not allow core file editing on the dashboard.

I got that same message when putting the code into my theme header. If you put the code in the way they tell you, which (I think) is between the head tags, you won't have any problem. It's not a bad idea to back it up ahead of time in case you make a mistake.

You can do it but it says, it will break your site in the future.

I've been running Adsense for about 6 weeks with no problems. I can understand why WP does not want an outside organization placing code into their theme header.

There are adsense plugins you can use to place Adsense ads on your site. If you enter "Adsense plugins" in the WA search bar, you will find some blogs on the plugins.

Best of success to you. Let me know how you do.

Help, please.
What the heck is a CSS file?

I am wondering how to use this CSS when I'm on my WP dashboard. There are a lot of explanation on what is the meaning but I was not able to read once the processes on how to do it on your website.
Thanks, Jean, Let's wait for an answer from the community.

CSS is Cascading Style Sheet. The idea is the look and feel of a website can be defined and those values can then cascade - think waterfall - through the rest of the site. WP is a way for a site developer to have a themed site without having to know CSS and several other web technologies,

There is a lot of training available on child themes. You do not have to have any specific or special theme for it to be a parent theme. Likewise for a child theme.

I think the issue though, that you are running into is that you are putting something in the header that should be put along the sides or at the bottom of your page.

I would suggest reviewing the lesson from Kyle that is located in Level3. I believe it is lesson 7. He walks you through this. If you are still not certain what to do, then do a search on adding AdSense to your site.

Anita

Thank you for bringing up the lessons. I have to go back and see where I've done wrong.

You're welcome!

I faced the same problem of warning but proceeded and nothing happened luckily.

However, it will be good following the Child theme suggestions and avoid breaking the site as approached problems vary.

We've invested much labor in it.

That's what I am worried about because my site seems to be in the breakage at the moment.

Also, back up your site occasionally.

Get any help from our community to rectify that.

No worries.

WA has the backup but having your won backup can help.

If you do decide to make changes in the Editor, copy all code into a text doc first so you then have the original to restore from if necessary.

And always create a child theme. I published a post on how to do this recently. Peace. :-)

Thank you for assisting, it was not my conscious interest in taking the importance of having this parent and child themes until I've been warned.

You need to create a child theme in order to maintain the consistency of your site. You don't want to end up using things like your headings and page layout by making changes on within the main theme.

Thank you Lorrie, I have to discover how to create this child theme.

Hi Jimmy. you need to create a child theme of your main theme. When the main theme is updated, all changes you have made will be lost, hence the warning.
Install a child theme to add code snippets to your CSS file, etc.
I use childify me plugin here...
https://wordpress.org/plugins/childify-me/

Takes a few seconds to install and activate.
David

Hi DE, I have noted what you wrote. What I don't know (being very computer illiterate!) is where do I type in the childify URL....or....
If I have to START by getting into childify URL, then how do I tell it which one,
(if I have two websites) I am asking it to childify ???

HELP, please

I'm not using a child theme right now, David. But, this looks like the way to go when I am ready for it.

Does it change anything in the current website once it is activated?

Jim

Hi Bob!
No, it doesn't change anything. It protects you from losing all of your changes when the main theme is updated. The child theme acts as a proxy to the main theme. Any code you add to the child will always be there.
...So if you wanted to change the size of your headers or paragraph text etc. you would paste the code in the CSS there

Hi John!
It may be easier for you to follow SurfsideBob's training below.

David

You can click on the URL and download the zip file from the page.
Then go to your WP Dashboard, Plugins, Add New.

At the top, you will see Add Plugins, Upload plugin.
Click upload plugin - Choose File and select the path where you had downloaded the zipped file.
Upload and activate.

I've been seeing that child theme being discussed but I don't know what I am using if it's a parent theme or not I just installed a theme and that's it.
Thank you for helping.

Thank you for that question to bring more answers to the discussion Jean.

Now I know the significance of knowing something about this parent and child themes.
