Are You the Sum of 5 People You Spend Most Time With?

Last Update: March 27, 2021

Investing in tools you're going to use might come in handy whenever you set out to achieve something. Are you devoting resources to achieving your goals?

A tool at our disposal for living a better life is other people we surround ourselves with are the most significant influence on our behavior, attitudes, and results. What they've got us thinking, saying, doing and becoming, sets the course of our life.

The people you habitually associate with determining as much as 95% of your success or failure in life. That's huge, and it has significant consequences.

If you hang out with negative people, do you expect to have a positive life?

If you do all the right things and don't get around people who hold you to a higher standard, you will likely fail.

Surround yourself with people you admire.

We become the people that we choose to expose ourselves to. They infect us with the behaviors and attitudes that helped them achieve their success in making it more likely that we will realize similar results in our life.

Who do you spend the most time with? Who are the people you most admire?

Until I got to WA I did not intermingle or fraternize after working hours because I was too busy with work. When I had my distributorship an elderly Gentleman owner ask me how many years did I run the machines that I was selling parts for and I said none. These were parts that had 2-5 thousands of an inch tolerance and ran at 1700 RPM when in the machines. I told him that I read everything that I got my hands on about the machines. I was in Massachusetts and my closest competitor (he had 25 employees and I was One) was in Connecticut and I was able to get my customers business away from my Competitor because of delivery, knowledge & and parts availability. I had other self learning opportunities with my promotions that I had where I had to prove my self. When I got out of the service and got a programming job was the last time that I had friends and fraternize with them in 1968. The community here is probably I feel closer to than I have in all the years since 1974 because of work. I was fortunate enough to get awarded airman of the year 1966 at Ground Electronics Engineering Installation Agency (GEEIA),
went to a number of Sales conventions earned, Regional Mgr of the year (had the Salesman of Year in my region), My own distributorship for 17 years, Paid off 2 SBA loans for $200,000 and other things. Sold the business in 2005.

Hi Abi
I agree in part. I know where the axe sharpening quote comes from (Abraham Lincoln) and he was referring (apparently) to putting enough time into developing skills and planning before taking action.

More to the point... I have never agreed with the Jim Rohn quote: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

I never met Jim Rohn to discuss this. But I suspect that when he said it, it was within a context that has been lost over time.

I would agree absolutely however that we tend to become the average of the people who have been had the biggest influence on our lives.

The older I get the less I am influenced by those I spend the most time with. Actually, I think, since we are all unique, none of us is really average.

Jim Rohn was a great, deep thinker who communicated much wisdom. I would have loved to have learned from him what he really meant.

I agree on this to an extent, Richard, If I look deep into myself I accept the fact that some people have had a great effect on me but with whom I spent even less time with than with my students; and their influence have been huge. Great point 👍

Wholeheartedly believe Abie that I should fill up my life with positive, forward-thinking, energetic, life-loving, fun, spiritual, and purposeful people. Hopefully, I too can fit the bill on some of those criteria.
