An Irrational Fear of Links - please send HELP!
I want to better understand the WHY of what is going on in the world of search engines. Since I pay for all my extras writing web content, and am looking to get into affiliate marketing, I thought I should understand better.
I know I need to use more links, including to outside sources. I read and heard it in the training. I see that it works. But...
...then there is this irrational fear of linking to other sites without permission. I know it doesn't make sense. I freely admit that it is irrational.
So, I really need to improve how I view the internet. My irrational fear of linking will, I know, become a chain that holds me back. So how do I break free? I am open to ideas and suggestions, please comment below and share your thoughts on linking, how to incorporate them, and what makes a good link choice. Anything is super helpful. And, good Lord, do I need the help of the WA community now!
You see, I am from the time before we had home computers or the internet for public use, so the idea that I can link to someone else's site or content without permission is still weird to me - almost creepy. Of course, if you want to link to my website, I am completely cool with it. Unless you are creepy, then I have issues with it.
I know there are many others on this platform from the same generation as me. How have you adjusted? Do you worry about people linking to your site? Or, is it any traffic is good traffic?

I guess I'm concerned about making someone feel uncomfortable. This might stem from unwanted communication my daughter recieved from an older man when she was 13. He used her contact information from a legitimate place to send a love letter. Creepy. I don't want to be that creepy person I guess.
Then again, maybe I'm just being hard headed. I may have been accused of that.
More linking, even if I'm not really liking it. Got it.

Hi I am probably a generation ahead of you, so I will not be much help, but I wanted to respond.
I am also afraid of links. I am also afraid of images, joining affiliate marketers, and of rankings. The only thing I am not afraid of is blogging.
I will watch your discussion with interest, and maybe I will also learn.

Thank you for commenting Janice. It is nice to know I am not alone. Sometimes I feel like everyone just does these things, and that there isn no inner struggle over it.

You literally have to ignore this irrational fear. As I mentioned before, if linking to other sites was an issue the most powerful website in the world Google wouldn't exist. They would literally need permission from millions of website owners to exist since they link to so many websites.
So that should help alleviate this irrational fear. WA doesn't recommend and teach tactics that will get you in trouble. At the end of the day, you really just need to ignore this fear. It's that simple.

Yeah understanding it is definitely the first step. Now you just need to follow through with the advice provided by people who have been doing this for over a decade. Its the next and final step with this. ;-)
Im also revisiting the review info you provided. It's hard to stray from the templates I'm used to from my job. Sometimes I start and then realize I'm using the wrong one. Patience...
Sounds good. It's very important you seperate what ou currently do in terms of writing with what is taught here. WA teaches you to write for both search engines, people and making money. Most other writing styles doesn't cover this. So although your writing for people may be strong, it won't see the light of day if you're not applying the other technical and marketing aspects that are provided in the training and some of the articles I sent you. You just have to learn to switch hats for this business. Some of the things you have done in the past will have some application here. So it's just a matter of mixing them with the training.
I am a little confused. Is this a critique of my web site. In any event, I appreciate your candor, and in my future articles, I will try to adhere.

Don't be sorry. I'm glad we can both benefit from these comments! I'm a strong writer, but I have trouble converting over to a "click friendly" style. Since you enjoy blogging, but not so much the other marketing aspects, I imagine we are in a very similar situation.
