The Trials and Tribulations of Creating a Training Video

The other day, ok, it's been probably a week or so now, grin, that I started to create a training video for adding text onto an image. Man, what a workout...

I use the free version of Screencast-o-Matic, an online site that offers free screenshots and videos. The free version is scant on options, yet, I can record up to 15 minutes. Much better than the ol' Jing recorder that had a 5-minute max time.

The reason I like the screencast version for video recording is that it is

  • SIMPLE!!!
  • Easy to Use!
  • FREE!

However, in the past year, I have saved the recorded videos to file, and it gets lost, kind of like the missing sock you lose in the dryer....gremlins, or whatever causes that to happen.

It has been my experience to need alternative methods to bypass certain things online, mainly because I like to circumvent the usual and find a different path.

For example, when I log into my screencast account, Here is the welcome screen:

I click on make a recording. A record button appears and off I go. This is one way to start a video record.

The other method is to click on the recorder button in the header.

However, once I started to record, it seems that I can only pause one time because after pausing the 2nd time, the pause button disappears behind the taskbar. Now, there is a tab to show the presence of the video, yet, when I click on it, nothing happens.

When I hover over the tab, a second tab appears with only an x box and no text. When I click on that, it ends the recording, without any record of the, uh, recording.

This is not a review, per se, just a mild rant while I await a reply from WA Site Support.

See, because I had to re-record the video so many times, I self-edited out the errors, lol, and only had to trim a few seconds and add some title cards.

And this video is something I had told a friend that I would add to my training here at WA. So, today, I finished the video (officially numbered video #9) and began the process of making another training here at WA.

However, for some reason, the file is not uploading properly, hence my ticket to site support to find out why the video was not uploading.

When the video posts, I will send out a short post to let you all know that it is available.

Some folks here have wondered how to add text (hot ticket question on Quora...) so I recorded a video on how to add text to your image using the free MS Paint program that is still included with Windows and Mac computers.

I know...some of you will shake your heads cuz this is so 'old school',. I love learning new things, however, when I can find the simpler way and provide the same results, I will do so.

I have used the MS Paint program since Windows98XP ruled. I first started out with the Yahoo chat messenger that had a paint program within messenger with a screen you could digitally create images: (see below)

The Windows 7 version was a learning curve with so many brush-style options.

So I learned how to make stuff before photoshop. Within the scope of what the MS Paint program can do....

I will add a second video once I learn why my videos are not being uploaded here.

That video will walk you through step-by-step on how to remove the background from any image for FREE! Watch for that one, too.

As always, if you have any questions about images, look them up here at the top of the page when you click on the magnifying glass when searching for answers, or add a reply to this post. I will be more than happy to help you.

Wow> Thanks for the heads-up, I have signed up and started playing with the platform; and it's real easy to use.

I know, I really like Screencast-o-Matic. I'm considering buying the premium for all of the bennies they provide.

I returned to Loom, to check it out. When I logged in, I remembered why I didn't like Loom. I prefer the screencast.

Let me know what you think.

Rudy

Great work ma. What a tireless efforts you're putting in here, thanks for the explanations on the screencast video making.

You're welcome!

Rudy

I use Paint 3D now Rudy, but I miss the old MS paint because instead of the + style target, you actually saw the pen, brush, or whatever utensil and it made the work go so much faster! A lot of my book covers were done using Paint3D!

Jeff

Yeah, I can see how actually seeing the brush point would help. I found it easier to draw a straight line with a corded mouse,, rather than a wireless,, go figure..
I have used paint 3d a couple of times, yet I feel I have better options and results with MS paint. If I need to, I can use paint.net.

The images I use on my blogs, the ones with text on an image, were made using paint..

I bet those book covers look great, Jeff!. I'll probably do the same thing for my upcoming road trip series of images taken along the way on my road trips.

Rudy

Thanks, Rudy! I'll have to check out paint.net! I was much more comfortable with MS Paint!

When I'm on the other computer, I will send you a picture of some cover art!

Have a GREAT day!

Jeff

Paint.net is easy to use, and you can find tutorials on the Tube...you will laugh as some of the tutorials are ancient...7-10 yrs old, yet still relative!

Sure, send a picture, thanks, Jeff.

Am having a wet and windy day today, will most likely have to mow the lawn one more time once the ground is dry!

Rudy

Thanks, Rudy! Careful with that mowing, my friend!

Jeff

I haven't thought about MS Paint in ages. That was always fun to use...gotta love old school stuff :-)

Susan

Yeah, no cobwebs here, Susan...grin.

MS Paint still works pretty well, too!

Rudy

Thanks,. I am looking forward to seeing the videos. I have used MS paint for a long time and still do, but only for basic operations.

Alex

Yeah, as soon I can upload the video, I will let you all know...

And yes, MS Paint is great for basics. You cannot layer images like you can with PS or paint.net (which is similar to Photoshop).
