A Shout-Out About Multilingual Websites

Hey folks,

Recently, someone asked or commented about the translation of websites.

On my crawl through the plugins best used for websites, as a way to clear out the unnecessary plugins, I came across a list of the best WP plugins from two reliable websites, Themegrill and WPbeginner.

I found that I already had a few of the ones listed (yay me, at least I know I'm on the right track, affiliate links and opinions aside...), and discovered a few that I might consider choosing over ones that I use or had considered previously.

That said, there are two premium Multilingual plugins worth mentioning.

TranslatePress and WPML

Of the two, I found the WPML to be the better of the two, based solely on the options per price ratio. See for yourself, below.

Neither have a free service, nor do they have a free trial.

TranslatePress

offers what a free version would offer- not much for $79 for one website.

On the other hand, WPML

gives you much more for the same price.

Not only that, you can use the CMS plan for 3 websites, the agency plan offers the exact same options, with the exception of unlimited websites.

Am not affiliated with anything here, just wanted to help those of you out who are thinking about adding a multilingual plugin.

Thanks, I am using a free multilingual plugin (GTranslate) and it seems to work ok, but to be fair, I do not read either of the 2 languages I am translating to.....

It probably works as well as Google translate (which is to say, ok but not great sometimes).

I will check out the 2 you have mentioned.

Alex

Google translate used to suck...lol. heard that directly from a translator friend of mine.

A few hours ago, I copy and pasted text that was written in a blog post reply.

I ran it through the G translator. When I read it, I could tell it was a literal translation, like I mean, literally.

The English translated version wasn't much better and did not make any sense for the reply.

The wpml seems worthy. The pro version is definitely worth having if you have that kind of global exposure. I've been on some foreign sigts that they will have a tab to translate, a drop down where you select rhe language.
I wonder how many global languages there are, I mean languages spoken globally, not just locally.

I hadn't considered creating a multilingual site but it's interesting to see options for doing it

Me too- never even crossed my mind, but for sure this really sounds like a great idea if one has the patience, means and audience to go this route. Interesting indeed 😊

Hey Rudy

This translator plugin is pretty cool and if it works properly can be very effective in reaching new geographically and culturally varied audiences. One thing however i is that you will also have to consider ensuring that your marketing assets etc. are also in the language forms you highlight. The language choices will have to be through and through.

Hugh

Thats true.
I looked it up...
Globally speaking (no pun intended)

This is a list of the most spoken languages in the world today.

1. English - 1.13 Billion
2. Mandarin - 1.12 Billion
3. Hind - 615 million
4. Spanish - 534 million
5. French - 80 million
6. Standard Arabic - 274 million
7. Bengali - 265 million
8. Russian - 258 million
9. Portuguese - 234 million
10. Indonesian - 199 million

Although English is the most spoken language, it is the 3rd most native language in the world behind Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.

"It is the second most widely spoken language in the world, and an official language of the United Nations, the European Union, and many other countries around the world...."

I guess we can look at providing translation as a benefit for our websites that reach gobally.

Very good research here Rudy. I think we have plenty English speaking market to flop around in lol.
Hugh

Sure, those of us who speak the language....but when you don't, its nice to have the option to translate into your language.
I found that convenient when on a social media site, when I want to reply yet it is in a foreign language.

There was an option to select my language. And I'm talking about sites that are in Amsterdam or Germany where the website was written in its native language.

We are used to seeing English everywhere...grin...

Thank you so much for this valuable information, Rudy.
Best wishes to you.
Thanks,
Joyce

You're welcome, Joyce!
