How to Deal with Writer’s Block

They are lots of psychosocial hindrances that might result in a writer’s inability to be creative; for most writers, it can be because of procrastination – for other writers, it might be due to some internal or external distractions that prevent them from completing a project.

For a writer to overcome these creative hindrances, they must first take active steps to turn on their creativity and bring up good writing ideas. The steps that will be mentioned in this article will be needed by writers who want to do more than wait for extra inspiration to come to them.

Tips You Can Follow to Deal with Writer’s Block

There are no definite ways of dealing with writer’s block, but there are some steps you can take to clear the current psychological hindrances you might be facing when doing a writing project.

These steps are not absolute, and some might be effective for you while the others might not; the key is to try a few of them until you find the one that is effective enough for you.

1. Get a quiet environment

Most writers prefer to write in the confines of a quiet office; others prefer an environment that is surrounded by music, while some would prefer a space filled with lots of people.

As a writer, what you have to do here is find the space that you feel more comfortable with and creative in while writing; it might be a quiet environment or one surrounded by people – just find yours.

2. Create a good outline for your writing

Most writers do not plan out their content before writing, and this is what causes these creative hindrances for them. When you are about to start writing, you have to create an outline for the beginning and end of your write-up.

3. Keep searching and be on alert

You have to be on alert and keep on searching for relevant news, articles, and information that might be useful to the topic or niche you are writing about. This will help you find pieces of information that might inspire and give you insight into the topic you are writing about.

4. Take a walk on an everyday basis

Taking a walk at least once a day can open up creative spaces in your mind; it will also help in clearing out distractions you have been getting while you are in your writing space. You can also consider taking your colleague or yourself out to a different place for a brainstorming session.

5. Create a content writing objective

As a writer, you have to adhere to the goals and schedules you have set for your writing; this will help build a habit of forcing yourself to always reach and accomplish your set goals.

You have to set schedules like writing limits, writing routines, and word limits. These plans will help encourage your mental faculty to come up with ideas in order to meet up with your schedule.

6. Never stop writing until you fulfill your goal

As soon as you start writing, continue doing so. You have to continue writing until you meet up to your writing goals; even if some of the writings are bad or improper, you can go back and fix them.

Doing this helps strengthen your mental ability for speed and efficiency. Follow the steps here to actualize this:

  • When you keep writing and have trouble writing a particular chapter or page, all you have to do is go to the next chapter and continue writing.
  • When you are done writing, you might have some ideas that can help you in completing the previous chapter; then, you have to go back and finish it.
  • You can also write on pieces of paper, and when you are done, you can assemble and rearrange them.

7. Find the one thing you look up to

Most writers have a source of inspiration when writing, and when these things are removed or blocked, they might find it hard to be creative while writing.

You have to find that element or source of inspiration that can help you while writing; if that thing is beyond your reach, then you have to find ways of creating something of such in your mind. Most writers find a source of inspiration from a song, a story, or even a life experience.

8. Change the position you use in writing

Most writers find it really hard to be creative because of the position or environment they always write in. Staying too much in a particular position or environment can hinder your creativity because it is fixed to that position.

If you change your environment or position when writing, it will give you more mental clarity, and you will find more creative ways of finishing your project.

9. Perform different tasks that aren’t part of your project

Wash your dishes, clean your house or even mow your lawn – just do something else apart from writing. Performing tasks that are not part of your writing project can go a long way in giving you mental clarity.

When you are writing or working on a project, and you feel stuck at a certain point, the best thing to do is to put off writing for a while and perform another task.

While you are performing another task, you will begin to have creative ideas flowing into your mind, and this is why most writers prefer using these steps. An alternative to performing a task is to take a shower.

10. Clear out mental hindrances

Meditating for at least 30 minutes or an hour can help in clearing out mental hindrances you might have while writing – what you have to do is to keep writing up to the point where you feel you have emptied your box of creativity, and then go ahead and meditate for 30 minutes, an hour or even more until you find the drive to write again.

11. Communicate with some people around you

Most writers hardly have enough time to communicate and interact for an extended period of time with the people around them; interacting is important for being creative at certain points in our lives.

You have to reach out to friends, colleagues, or family members and start a conversation about a particular interest or idea. As you do this, you might gain more insight or knowledge regarding a topic or project you are working on.

Wrapping up

Writing creatively can be most times difficult to keep up with, and so you need to find ways of becoming more creative while writing if you have a problem with being creative while writing, you can use the tips in this article to your advantage.

I hope this article makes your day brighter, stay positive and be happy. Please don’t forget to give me a LIKE and your short COMMENT. Thank you, my beloved WA family.

Hi Joyce. Thank you for sharing.
These are great practical tips. I have also found that doing something different when you're stuck in your writing is more productive than staring at the blank page.

When I go back to writing, there is no sense of guilt for having wasted time. Instead, I find that the break has revitalized me.

Thank you so much, Thokozile!
Thanks that you like some of the tips. Yes, I'll do that too. If no ideas are coming into my mind, I change my activity, I change into gardening while gardening my mind is working again, when I have enough ideas, I need to go back to writing again. Not really easy sometimes.

Thank you so much for your comment and insight.
Best wishes,
Thanks,
Joyce

Best wishes to you, my friend.

Thanks for the great advice. I have found outlining very important plus it was hammered into us in school. I also move about once in awhile while writing. I put writing implements out of reach so I have to get up to get a stapler, another pen or paper. It sounds silly, but the movement actually stimulates new thoughts.
